How would you know when new extensions are released, be it Tld's, cctld's and so on?

Is there a website which provides information about it?

well, the best thing to do is to comb over every registry maybe once every so often and keep sending emails ;) its time consuming but it works. managed to bag a few gems doing it aswell. although it is tedious, it pays off in the end

go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name

and click on each extension. it will take you to the registry page of each name

Good luck

The best source is ICANN. All domains TLD must have an entry in the root servers, which requires ICANN approval. I am talking about "real" TLDs here, not the new.net vanity domains or lookalikes

I thought the same. Just an example, .ly was released but it didnt appear in the icann website. Many more would release without notifications in icann.

That's the worry.

The best source is ICANN.

The .ly release yesterday was not really a release. It was just a reopening of the namespace as a new organization had taken over the registry. They may also have adopted new regulations but there are several old registrations in this namespace.

If a new country is to get their own ccTld you will find information at ICANN and IANA.

BUT keep in mind most new ccTLD are really not new. It's just that the country have never used their ccTLD. Take a look at .sj and .bv at www.iana.org. These two extensions are existing but they are not opened and most likely never will be opened. If an old extension like that will open up for registrations you will not find information about it at ICANN / IANA.

How can I find the registry of the specific cctld, to find out the availabilty for it's registration?

Kev mentioned this link,

Would those new extension be updated as soon as it is released for registration in the link above?

You have to do your homework. It's no shortcuts here I think. Use this website:

http://www.iana.org/root-whois/index.html

Under each Tld you will find a lot of information i.e. their administrative contact and technical contact. But keep in mind this information is not always up to date. If a Tld currently not in use is assigned nameservers you're able to monitor the change here. Search for information.

It's not very likely, this is wikipedia and for this information to change someone has to voluntary do it. You can edit this yourself if you find some new information.

As soon as .asia is added to the root zone you will find the root whois here:

http://www.iana.org/gtld/gtld.htm

But I'm sure you will be able to find the information at ICANN. It will be written in the application for .asia, and you will find it in almost every document regarding this issue over at ICANN.

So then do the domain registrars launch their domain registrations only after it is added here?
As soon as .asia is added to the root zone you will find the root whois here:

http://www.iana.org/gtld/gtld.htm

BTW, is there any specific registrar which launch the domains first or do they all do it at the same time?

Wow, ToyBoy, you really like plugging that site, you gotta make back your $99 WWD fee somehow though, eh?

A sort-of answer to Charley's question, if it's .asia you're interested in, then EuroDNS/AsiaDNS ***
I edited this info out- I have in my calendar they will be offering pre-reg of .asia next week, but can't see it on the site***

EuroDNS Site News said:
DotAsia Contract signed!
The DotAsia Organisation signed the contract with ICANN!

DotAsia Organisation Ltd. is a membership-based not-for-profit corporation located in Hong Kong that was created in March of 2004 for the purpose of being the Registry for .asia Domain Names and signed on the 6th December 2006 the Contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to operate the new sTLD registry for the โ€œ.Asiaโ€ top-level domain (TLD).

EuroDNS/AsiaDNS will offer free .asia pre-registration in a few days. Details of the various registration periods for .asia can be found in the latest online presentation.
Download the Presentation about DotAsia here to get the newest information.

I have had another look at EuroDNS and AsiaDNS, the presentation it invites you to download is not there- which may be where I got that pencilled-in date from.
I got a feeling that the hold-up is because they can't offer pre-registrations until the rules for .asia are finalised- probably a legal issue, although if memory serves me correctly there were going to offer a pre-pre-registration where you could "express your interest" before the rules were finalised and then opt to pre-register if you qualified.

I have sent them an email (here is the link to support if anyone else is going to message them) to see if they have any news.
I'll post here as soon as I get a reply.

I sent them a support email. They mentioned, will be creating a schedule this week and despatching it soon. However, the price for it are still unknown.
