Neustar wins .gay contract

Here is the story:

Neustrar has signed a deal to provide back-end registry services to DotGay LLC, one of the companies hoping to apply for .gay as a new top-level domain.

There are currently two companies planning to apply for .gay that I’m aware of. The other, the Dot Gay Alliance, has chosen Minds + Machines as its back-end partner.

The positioning is quite interesting. Scott Seitz, CEO of DotGay, played up the need for more security and stability in a TLD that may find itself the target of homophobic cyber-attacks.

In a press release due out tomorrow, Seitz says:

While security is always a concern for any gTLD, the GLBT community is at a higher risk of discrimination, making system integrity a critical component in the selection of a registry partner.

Neustar, which runs .biz and several other TLDs, has more experience running high-traffic registries than M+M. However, this fact will likely not be relevant to which company wins .gay.

Under the ICANN new TLDs program, applicants have to prove themselves capable of running a registry, but contested TLD applicants are not compared against each other based on technical prowess.

It’s much more likely that the two (or more) .gay applications will live or die based on community support or, failing that, how much money they are prepared to pay at auction.

The .gay TLD is likely to also be a flashpoint for controversy due to ongoing debates about governments’ ability to block TLDs based on “morality and public order” objections.

Recent mainstream media coverage has focused on .gay as a likely test case for governmental veto powers.

Is it just me or is the new addition of these new extensions sort of splintering the internet into groups? Almost the same contrast as when going to school the table you sat down at and the friends you made. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against .gay etc but I think the net is being splintered as we speak :S

Maybe I'll rethink this a few years from now but for now I don't see these new extensions as a good thing :S

I am not a fan of extensions that split people into groups like this.

Realistically how would this extension ever take off? The most popular regs are going to be names like JoeSmithis.gay

What is the point of generics?

Money.gay
Fitness.gay
Oil.gay

It makes no sense.

I see it as vanity and nothing else, really. As stated above, there'd be no real point in generics. What would money.gay be used for? How about cars.gay? Gay cars and money? It'll be used primarily to spread HATE. School kids have it the worst: Imagine a bully regging WaldoIs.gay and making a site based on this poor kid. Sure, there will be those who'll take every dictionary word .gay, believing there will be value into them, but it's really just a vanity thing.

Aside from that, what is the PURPOSE of .gay? Really. I'm straight and have gay/bi friends & SUPPORT the gay community. But .gay is there to segregate types of ppl and I really frown upon that. And since there'll be a .gay, wouldn't it make sense to have a .straight for ppl who are "proud" to be straight?

Segregation is wrong on so many levels and that said, .gay is pointless and is a travesty. I scald EVERY HUMAN ALIVE who regs one without having a moral, legit development plan for it... which would be about 99.9999999999999999% of the population.

I think it is only being created because Scott Seitz is an idiot who should be fired from his position of CEO.

Isn't the whole point of gay rights groups to get equality, and then you have this moron coming along to try to separate everyone?

I certainly will not be touching this with a bargepole, not until .straight comes along at least.

One thing I have never understood is this "gay pride" thing, if you were really proud would you not need to shout from the rooftops?

I'm afraid pointless extensions will continue to be released as long as domainers buy them. And there is no shortage of suckers.

Contract or not. I doubt very much that this gTLD will be approved ever.

I'm straight and I'm proud of it. That's ot to say I frown upon gays/bi's. I'm associates with a few gays and a few bi's. I'm just saying I'm straight. I don't need to climb a water tower to let the world know. And the gay community should be pretty much the same. They're gay and they're proud. That's it. Move on. .straight will never be made because straight ppl don't make as big a deal about their straight-pride as gays do with their gay-pride. There's no point in wasting one's life letting ppl know that they're proud of a life decision. Just as straight ppl are, they should just smile and ENJOY that pride, not spend every second putting it on display. And funny thing is, .gay doesn't help the cause in any real manner whatsoever. So assuming .gay is made, the main registrants will be GAY BASHERS and bullies. Thanks for SPREADING THE HATE, ppl!

One thing I have never understood is this "gay pride" thing, if you were really proud would you not need to shout from the rooftops?

Isn't the title of this thread misleading? The .gay tld hasn't been awarded yet. There are just 2 bidders in the ring.

Eh, doesn't matter. .gay will be short-lived. It wouldn't make it 3 months.

Pointless extension (like 95% of all upcoming gTLDs).
