In a shock move, a committee of ICANN’s board of directors has overturned the rejection of dotgay LLC’s Community Priority Evaluation, ordering that the case should be re-examined by a new panel of experts.
As you may recall, dotgay’s CPE was kicked out in October after the Economist Intelligence Unit panel decided that the company’s defined community was too broad to be described by “gay” as it included a lot of people who aren’t gay, such as straight people.
Under the EIU’s process rules: “With few exceptions, verification emails are sent to every entity that has sent a letter(s) of support or opposition to validate their identity and authority”.
It seems that the EIU was sent a bundle of 54 letters of support for dotgay, but did not email the senders to verify they were legit.
The BCG could find no fault with the EIU’s determination on Nexus, so even if dotgay’s letters of support are verified according to procedure, it would not necessarily lead to dotgay picking up any more Nexus points.
The BCG wrote on Nexus: “Requester’s substantive disagreement with the CPE Panel’s conclusion does not support reconsideration”.
However, given that the EIU is going to do the entire CPE all over again with new panelists, it seems entirely possible that dotgay could win this time.

Keep in mind that those are adult / pornographic in nature. "Gay" is more of a lifestyle, even though some media outlets try to push it as adult / pornographic. On another note, "Gay" also has a definition that means "To be happy". The media push on gay being related to pornographic material may or may not be a bias reason in the first panels decision to decline the application. Hopefully the 2nd panel will understand the meaning a little more and agree that whilst some of the employee's may live a gay (sexuality based) lifestyle, other employee's may in fact be gay (Happy) in nature. ;)

Well, there are a lot more .gay people in the world than .ninja. I just don't see even a quarter of these ever being in common use.

The majority would probably end up being personal blogs / journals / Rights movements of very prideful people. Even if the majority end up being for personal usage, with the potential number of registrations / renewals (even in a private sector), it would probably be worth it to the registry and any registrar that may end up pushing them to the consumer.

I do see your point, but I would have to agree with @Eric_Lyon on the personal blogs and whatnot.

It's somewhat off topic, but I like to do my social responsibility. I was going to invest in a .hiv for the same purpose, as a way of donating and showing my personal support. However, HIV is a virus that can't be combated unless millions more registered that gTLD, or donated. So it's somewhat saying, I didn't vote, because I knew the candidate I wanted wouldn't win anyway. I know, pretty hypocritical. (Though, I do donate to this cause)

Now on to the .gay gTLD, it does have a lot of people that may take it in and use it as a personal blog. The term we loosely use as being derogatory towards the LGBT community (faggot) is used among themselves in a positive manner, though dropping the got isn't.

There are plenty of people who are proud to be gay and this may be the gTLD that shows ultimate support towards the movement of total equality, if everyone that is gay and runs a blog, does switch over.

The number of developed websites may drastically beat other gTLD's in the race, it's all how they will market it.

Even though there are a lot of gay people, the community is small so to speak. With that being said, it only takes a couple influential people to make .gay the gTLD of choice for bloggers, etc.

I could even see Ellen.gay and her promoting that, quite possibly over EllenTV, and winning a lot of registrations for the registry.

As you can see, it only takes the right person to send the message to the right target audience, and you have yourself a winner.

Techies love anything involving ninja. We're weird like that. CloudFlare has a mascot ninja for each of their nameservers, for example. (When we sleep we dream we're ninja hackers.)
