NetSol PendingDelete for entire year?

I have been monitoring a domain for a while and its expiration date just passed the other day.

On the day that it expired I did a whois lookup and saw that it had been extended for another year. The same registrant appeared in the contact details so I just assumed the existing owner had renewed it. I was disappointed that I didn't get the domain and thought that was it.

Then today I checked the registration again and the registrant was changed to Pending Renewal or Deletion at Network Solutions. I did some searching on this and have read that this is a common practice for Network Solutions for expiring domains.

What I am confused about though is that the current expiration date now reads April 15, 2015. All of the stories where I have seen people discussing this indicate that when this happens the expiration date doesn't change, and at most it should change by a month or so. But it looks like this one isn't going to expire now for a whole extra year.

Has anyone seen this behavior before from Network Solutions. It is likely/possible that the domain will end up with snapnames before a year or do I just have to wait?

I have registered at all the drop sites I have heard about - namejet, snapnames, pool.

Thanks for advice.

This is actually common (if not standard) practice among registrars where the domain has expired and is on hold. The domain should go through the typical expiry/deletion process which is about 45 days.

Because the domain is with Network Solutions, however, expect the unexpected.

All .com domains are automatically renewed between the registry and the registrar whether or not the registrant has renewed their domain. The registrar is refunded 45 days after expiry if the registrant hasn't renewed the domain. This is common with all registrars, not just NetSol. This is what you are seeing. It is also why you should only do whois lookups at the registrar (which shows the true expiry date and not the expiry date between the registry and the registrar).

Thank you for this information. Indeed when I look closer at Network Solutions it still shows the original expiration date instead of the updated one. I thought I had looked at this already but apparently overlooked the different date. Excited to keep trying to get this domain!

Thanks again for the info.

GoDaddy don't show the renewal when you use GoDaddy's whois and you are looking at the registrar data and not the registry data.

All .com domains go into redemption on day 46 at all registrars, because that is the date unrenewed domains are deleted at the registrar (under normal circumstances).
