.net sites that trump their .com

I know that many believe that .coms are 100x better to have but I see often enough a dot net site where they own the dot com too.

http://www.mygamercard.net/

That's an example. I also own a .net started site where I later acquired the dotcom but I still run the site as a .net.

Does anyone else have sites they know that runs as the .net even though they own or just redirect the dot com?

Did you mean to say in the OP that ".com's are 100x better" instead of ".net's are 100x better"? That is the only way the post makes sense to me.

Yes...correction made. Thanks.

studentdoctor.net Nice...PR7 site but they don't own the dot com. I am very pro-development on a .net when the .com is parked. It means the site won't be confused and they won't be competing with you in SERPs. Yes the dotcom will get more visits now that the .net is developed but realistically it's not that much of a percentage.

Since I bought the dotcom of my popular .net site I realize I wasn't losing much traffic at all.

There are a number of older hosting and ISP sites that chose the .net when it really meant Network, and before .com became the norm. Many have since acquired the dotcom, and some have moved to it. (earthlink.net, aplus.net). AT&T used .net for a long time for customers and reserved .com for investor relations type sites.

It's also pretty common for .net sites to do what hughes.net does and forward to hughesnet.com. They keep the net, but append "net to their name and add .com. I've got a couple very strong keywords in other tld's where I've done this with the .com as well. An example is Dive.biz where I also registered Divebiz.com to package them.

Many older tech forums have stayed with the .net as well.

They do own the .com :)

Do you mind sharing the traffic stats on the developed .net and what traffic that .com gets? No names of course (unless you feel like it) just some numbers would be cool.

I actually have noticed the same on several occasions. .com is just burned into our brains (speaking for myself and the general population around me that I have interacted with), but really... .net works too. I do go for .coms, but I realized if the keyword is strong enough, it is definitely worth it when developed properly.

Yes, I'm kind of tired of hearing all the .COM is king, everything else is trash and if you develop another extension you merely benefit the .COM comments. Yes, .COM is easier to sell and some of the traffic may end up at the .COM. But if someone has seen your .NET/.TV/.INFO site before with content and they accidentally type in the .COM on a repeat visit, they will instantly realize their mistake even if it is developed. I just launched a .NET and noticed the equivalent .COM parked at SEDO. If I had that domain I know where I would price it and yet it never amazes me. Generally speaking the only offers one gets from SEDO are the puny $100-$200 ones but if you make a similar offer for another domain, how do they respond? $2000-$50K Anyway it will be interesting to see how the traffic of the .COM changes if at all.

My .net (in siggy) does okay, despite the blockbuster .com version.

I just made the .net part of the webiste name and I also have the *****net[dot]com version as well, but I don't think it makes that much difference.

Unless you get a lot of word of mount or do verbal advertising like TV or radio, most websites are now accessed by links or search engines. This leaves less chance of typing in the wrong (.com) address. I notice that I as a more tech savvy internet user, I type in domains way more than my non-tech friends, family, and employees. Some of them will enter the URL in Google instead of the address bar every time, then click on the link when it comes up. If the developed .net is more popular, it will beat a parked .com any day on the google page.

Wouldn't developing the .net version, marketing & link building etc. drastically influence the amount of traffic that would have gone to the .com version?

If you acquired the .com version after your .net became popular wouldn't the numbers be skewed?

Last week or so I was looking for some stats/studies/surveys etc. about this same type of loss in traffic com vs net, without much avail. If you happen across any hard data on the subject please do share.

Drastically - no

There might be some leakage. Enough for somone to make a few dollars in parking revenue each month - but not enough to make a living and definately not enough revenue loss for the DOT NET owner to spend 10 minutes focused on this problem.

I'm not talking revenue, just traffic. Revenue would be visitor action, clicking on an ad at the .com. From what I've seen (in my brief searching) it's not an easily quantifiable number, as it's not very easy to monitor a visitors intentions.

Sorry Labrocca seems like I'm hijacking your thread
