Yeah you heard me right.

I wan't to see the domain industry flourish so i don't always voice my opinions if it's not for something but i think healthy discussions can be beneficial, even for me. I'm always learning.

The other day while networking, a young lady told me she wanted to buy her own birth name but a company owned it and was asking about $700 for it. The first company came to mind was buydomains.com and after researching it I was right. Luckily for her they dropped it and she was finally able to take ownership. Anyway that's not the point of this thread.

What she said next was what I kept saying over and over. She said(to paraphrase), "People keep bringing up .net but I just can't settle for that, i want a dotcom" And she was just upset someone would take her name. The young man next to her agreed and said: " what's that anyways(speaking of .net)" and said "I would even take a .org because it is established for organization" And these are everyday people who are not domainers or anything connected. Just people who would start blogs or startups.

What they said was exactly my thoughts. .NET is nothing more than a side chick and your real woman or man is a .COM. Some domainers like to back it up but I'm calling it out. Before you back it up: show me your .net business site?
Yeah I thought so. You don't even believe in it to use it for your main brand or site. The real reason you back it up is because you own a couple liquid .nets that can be traded between domainers.

The next argument is ohh, but .net is old and has more registrations than .org etc.. so that makes it second.. The truth is even a .org is more established because everyone even non domainers know what it's for. The real grade we should use to determine what is second to .com is not registrations but how many sites are built in proportion to registered domains. That will tell you the real truth.. Apart from media.net(when i was searching hard to find an alternative to adsense), It's been over a year since i have ran into a .net website/legitimate business?

I have even seen .com and .net available but .org registered? That baffled me..That say's even .org is more solid for someone to not care about the .com. But that's a side observation. I own a dotnet and I'm not saying you wont sell if you own a dotnet.. It's just very overrated. I guarantee if you go to your non domainer friends or people in the street and ask them what domain extansion they would choose for their business, I guanrantee they would almost all say .com or.org. I only see .net as an internal trading domain ext.. like maybe a lll.net etc..

Honestly, the chinese will have to rescue this extention and give it some life...yes buy the chips. But even that is just internal trading..The chinese have had .net landing pages with nothing on them since the dawn of .net.

This is not an attack just my honest opinion that .NET is side chick.. And that's a compliment, because atleast people use side chicks... ohhhhhhh

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
You missed the news... It's not as popular as .org either... Catch it in the morning paper..ohhhhhh

Popularity and pricing are different things.

I'd grant that .org's have a bit more popularity, but the nature of that beast is that they hold less value. Few real non-profit orgs will fork over the amount of cash (for good reason) needed to make them really attractive investments over .net names. IMHO.

Hahaha good comparison and really liked that story about the non domainers talking in regards to the extensions. I do agree with you like everyone knows .com is King, while .org is known among non domainers and hey .net domains are fun to play with and you can profit with internal trading.

The only .net domains I would get are popular one word ones. But of course I believe I own 1 .net lol.

Why and how did happen that .com won in the competition with .net?
For me .net is more logic for domain.
Ok, I know the .con is the king, and now all of us preffer .com, but why and how it happened?
Why .com?

Well...that depends on your definition of a "side chick".....there is a "girl on your side" in your avatar...pretty sure your "main chick" wouldn't mind....

What percentage of yesterday's Super Bowl ads highlighted any extension other than .COM?

Rich people don't usually live in tiny houses or drive 4-cylinder cars either :)
They are not representative of the majority of companies.

My friend, I have spent 10 minutes of my life, so you don't have to spend next 15 years looking for .net sites at such slow pace 1 site/per year .net websites are plenty:

http://abg.net/
http://abh.net/
http://abg.net/
http://abl.net/
http://www.abo.net/
http://abq.net/
http://www.abz.net/
http://acw.net/
http://acu.net/
http://aci.net/
http://www.aco.net/
http://www.aco.net/
http://www.ack.net/
http://acc.net/
http://www.acn.net/

After you visit all these, you can just keep going down the alphabet and you'll be amazed how deep is the rabbit's hole..

But that is bullshit!
Show us some data, back your opinion with something more than nothing.
I would like to see some hard cold facts on this. Just apply my advice from post on top and go search for working .net I'm sure you'll lose you heresy in less than half an hour and come back all healthy with fresh head. :)

IMO .net is might be more popular outside US. At least in Finland (yup, not that significant :D ) there are a few top sites on .net.

I have just recently sold a .net to an end user and they will be using it. NDA doesn't allow me to disclose the name, but yeah, end users use them and people pay nice amounts for them... Mobile.net sold for $500k a year ago...

Sidechicks are fun, but nobody wants to marry them..:-oohhhh

Why would you marry a sidechick? That would just create a new sidechick vacancy. :D;)

On another note I recall someone on here saying he`s been having great success shifting .net over the years. If you see this and you are the one who made this claim would you please give some insights as to how you go about it. Hard enough for moi to shift a com talk less of the sidechick.

Really? I have this . net I have been trying to get Germans interested in for 2 years now. Google search shows a couple of firms in Germany and Austria are operating under that name. Then I found an institute involved in neuro science have named their project same as this domain. One of the 3 researchers in charge of the project has been picking up other tlds as the registrant on behalf of the institute. The .com belongs to a big French company and is a fully functional website.

Any insights as to how to you went about making those sales? I can PM you the name if thats cool with you. Thanks
