Unstoppable Domains

Need some hosting advice...

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
I have started to develop several domain names. Some of them I will keep and some I will end up selling.

Some of these domain names are getting serious traffic - but only during a couple months a year (seasonal).

I am using Bluehost for all of my domains but one. One, I have on Godaddy.

At what point does one have to switch to a hosting service that can handle heavy traffic. Is there a magic number?

If I am ever lucky enough to reach this level of traffic - can anyone give me some advice on who I should host my sites with?

Thanks ahead of time...

Traffic is unlikely an issue. You could probably transfer 100s of GBs a month and it not matter.

On a shared platform the bigger issue is CPU Load and Concurrent Bandwidth access (i.e. lots of people accessing video at the same time).

You can probably see some stats in your control panel - it's unlikely to be a problem though unless you are serving 100,000s of pages a month.

If you are you should just look for a hosting provider that offers non-shared hosting like Hostgator, Lunarpages or look in the Web Hosting Offers section :)

It takes a LOT of traffic to cause issues: shared hosting companies have hundreds of sites on a single server.

Try narrowing your list of options by looking at the cheapest web host package that can meet your needs at the same time.

Informing often takes the shape of instant account suspension, so I can understand the OP's worry.

No, there isn't. Things depend on too many factors (hardware, software, database size etc.). The host may be able to help if you give them an accurate description of your site. They will probably tend to be a bit conservative in their estimations, encouraging you to upgrade sooner rather than later.

Hello,

The amount of traffic plays a bit part but in some cases the type of site you're hosting plans a bigger part. For example a plain HTML/CSS website will easily be able to get much more traffic without causing problems on the server when compared to a Wordpress site for example.

Yes, I have been told this. Unfortunately, someone bought the .net to the site and developed it - so now I am wondering if I will get any traffic at all :(

I am using Godaddy for the big traffic one and Bluehost for the rest.

I am using Godaddy for the big traffic one

I have heard they are good only for domain registration, not for hosting.

Is it right?

Or does everything work fine?

I am new to Godaddy for hosting - but I think that sounds about right. I have had a few glitches and Wordpress was really hard for me to set up. I phoned Godaddy and someone helped me with it.

*Please keep in mind - I am not an expert in this.

I really like buying domains on Godaddy because you can search for promo codes and save a lot of money when buying domains.

I have never heard of VPS, thanks for telling me about it. I contacted my hosting service and they seem to think that I will be fine with what I have.

I guess time will tell...

Hi Avabelle,

Hope i'm not invading here, but could i ask what you pay for hosting at the moment?

For around $35 a month you can get a decent VPS plan.

Shared hosting means you're literally sharing a server with up to hundreds of other sites, all using unpredictable amounts of cpu/ram at totally unpredictable times. Hence why you can get suspended quite easily at times if you're site is using high bandwidth (within a short amount of time), or cpu or ram.

A VPS server is a not quite a dedicated server. VPS = Virtual Private Server. Basically a dedicated server split up into mini dedicated servers :P. You have your own allocation of cpu, ram, space, and bandwidth, all of which you can use to your hearts content, for as long as you like.

If you're experimenting with media websites, anything that could utilize a large amount of resources, a VPS is your best bet. A VPS is an awesome alternative to needing a dedicated server. A VPS can require more knowledge though, than a shared host, if you have bad support from your host, or a non-managed VPS. (I would suggest managed).

That's just some general info really, if you REALLY want good advice on this though, you really should give us some data. I.E. Pageviews/day, bandwidth/day within holiday season, and the same stats during low-traffic periods.

But for me, $35 a month for freedom and peace of mind is a small price to pay =)

Hope this helped at least a bit,
-Rhett.
