If your not going to use it for gaming, have you considered a MacBook Pro? That very well may be my next laptop purchase. Apple just released a new series recently where the entire computer is made out of 1 block of aluminum that has been hollowed out! Pretty incredible, IMO. I was just looking at their prices today with another person, and I think it could fit your budget (maybe get the Macbook (not Pro) if you don't need Firewire).

Just my 2 cents.

I owned a Macbook pro and I didn't like it.

Look at a Toshiba or ASUS.

I agree with James. Toshiba or ASUS, with Toshiba being a little more expensive.

Dell XPS series (coming from someone that doesn't like Dell)
Apple Dual Core as alternative. the best of both worlds. (My next choice if i can make myself spend a fortune on a laptop)

from a pure residual value standpoint, from what I gather macbooks hold their value much better than the competition.

You could buy a laptop for $2500 and sell it for $2000 a year later or $1600 2 years later.

A PC will go from $2500 to $1500 in a year, then $1200 or less in 2 years.

Supposedly the windows emulators work better (faster, more efficiently) than pcs

can anyone verify that?

True , but...he needs a working model, i don;t think he cares about the resell value in 4 years, lol :)

Easy to explain...if you are a windows guy, have worked with windows the last couple years, stick with it...you get a better value on the buck, don't pay for the name..

If you wanna experience something new and budget is not an issue...try a MaC...but be aware it is different...and yeah of course you can play around with boot camp(dual boot system, windows and mac on one machine)...but if you end up just using windows after wards, what would be the purpose of paying 1000 bucks more?? :)

ok maccies, if you wanna flame me now open a new thread for that, would u? (i have both, a mac and a windows lappi)

Cheers

Frank

Toshiba laptops are good, they tend to last forever. I'm currently using a Toshiba Satellite A200-28P, it cost me about £700.

I have also been impressed with Toshiba. I would say IF you even think about looking at an HP, make sure it's a good model - they have a very annoying (recent) history of the wireless switches breaking and not turning the card on, even though the light is displayed. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend an HP.

Toshiba on the other hand... IBM too...

Dell are OK, certainly not the worst. There's some pretty good models out there, and from my experience, they last a good time. I'm working on getting some of my dell certifications right now, btw, so I can look up specific specs if you want...

If your looking for any sort of dual-boot system though running Linux, make sure your chipset is supported in linux. That's the MOST annoying thing about my current dell Inspiron 2200. As a result, I haven't touched linux in a few years.

(my stupid broadcom wireless card's chipset hasn't been released to the public, and I've never been able to get it to work)

My next laptop is probably going to be a Macbook running a dual boot of OSx and Linux. I'm getting a desktop in December (a friend is giving it to me) so I'll use that for my Windows machine.
