Need a little help. Found a great laptop, but i am concerned about a few things.

http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=407003

Processor AMD Turion 64 x2 Dual Core
AMD - never used AMD, any opinions?

Processor speed tbc
what the hell they don't know the speed?

Processor cache 512 kB
My greatest concern, will that affect performance?

Shared graphics Up to 559 MB
My desktop has 256 dedicated graphics - will 559 be more powerful even though it is shared? I'm not sure how to look at this. Can i play high end graphics games without it lagging out etc?

Battery life (maximum) tbc
Again, WTH!

What do you guys reckon?
I will shoot out rep for helpful responses.

Do i buy it ?

I would go for it. Make sure that you get warrent on it though.

I nearly always get AMD processors. I find you get more power for you ยฃ or $

If you are going to game on your system you should get a notebook with dedicated graphics.

The main drawback is that the notebook will heat up faster and the battery life wont be as good as integrated graphics.

Hope this helps.

I've got an AMD processor in my laptop - no complaints!

I've heard some reports of software/driver compatibility problems with 64 bit processors though.

asteroidblues is right about the graphics, many laptops being sold these days are really desktop replacements - so big and powerful that they're not much more portable than a pc.

I just bought my laptop second hand. It was only a couple of months old and was half the price. The only downside is that it is missing ONE screw. If I wanted to, I could resell it on and probably make a profit :D

If you want a new one though, I suggest staying away from Curry's, PC World etc. (Too expensive).

The best deal is probably online, don't know where though. :(

opinions:

1)
If you're into gaming, I'd get the one with the bigger graphics card, not the one with the bigger HD (160GB is loads anyway, IMHO).

2)
Never buy anything from HP. ever. it'll go wrong and their support is the worst.

I have a laptop that is an AMD. Love it and no complaints so far. Bought it earlier this year. It isn't the Sony Vaios but I hear its a pretty awesome product. I also have vista. Thought to give it a try and step out of XP. Its great for plenty of games, movie making and photos. I have the Processor cache 512 kB and no worries as of yet.

I am looking at the Asus machines quite seriously now

http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=Asus_Laptop_F3Sv-AP073G

I think this is the one
i have a old asus laptop (pentium M + 512MB ram) and i am pretty satisfied with it .. good battry life and overall performance considering the fact that it is oooooold

the only problem is that they have still not listed my model on their website and i cannot find any audio drivers for it till now.. .therefore have to listen to any music on Ubuntu and come back to windows to do normal stuff :(

ASUS is a good buy and kind of makes u apart from all the HP's and Viao's all around ;)

Hey that does look like a nice machine, pretty solid. I bought a gaming beast last year but went through dell. I've heard that asus has been coming back with better products as of late. I've gotten amd ever since they came out with k6-2 processor but got a core 2-duo last year and can't complain. If you can use a coupon like with dell I'd say go for it. Just remember about a laptop and gaming (I'm dealing with myself, only after a year) that you're locked into that technology and can't upgrade. So if you're going to get a gaming laptop I'd go all out and get the latest and greatest. Anyways just my two cents, gl :cy:.

Peace

It is good, but Intel C2D processors are better.

Probably not (it is weaker and you cannot play newer games with it)

One more thing, and probably the most important when buying laptop, is screen size - if you are buying it to replace your old PC and it will stay on your desk most of the time then 15" is very good, but if you are planning to carry it around then you should be looking at something much smaller (maybe even 12,1")
