if your hdd is in ntfs format I do not think you can format in dos mode (I may be wrong).

What you can do is put the cd for xp pro into your cdrom, restart the pc. when you are prompted to boot from cd press the space bar (if you are not prompted to boot from cd you will have to change the boot sequence in your bios so that it looks in your cdrom before the hdd).

When you see the setup screen follow the instructions until it asks you if you want to repair the current installation or install a fresh copy, choose to install from a fresh copy, it will ask you where first delete the current partition then recreate it (should be self explanatory in the setup pages), then choose to install windows on that partition it will then ask you if you want to do a quick format or a detailed format, the choice is yours, from there go through the setup to complete it.

ooh and as luxinterior pointed out ensure you do a backup (and double check the back up's are not corrupted). I recently formatted my pc after making what I thought to be a good backup, turned out I had lost alot of important email's because the backup was not carried out properly.

what you need is a win98 boot disk.

you should be able to get one off bootdisk.com if you dont have it.

when you got everything backed up that you want, boot the computer with the floppy disk so you enter dos. type 'format <drive letter>:' and it will format that letter.

eg 'format c:'

if you have partitions and stuff you want to work with you will need fdisk or a partition program. contact me on msn if you got more questions.

Exactly like AsclepiusZ said. You need to format C. Forget about the references to 98 or whatever is there. Seems to me you've had some pretty good suggestions here and there's loads of information on the Net. The rest is up to you...

if it is in ntfs format (xp's choice of file system) then a 98 boot disk wont help much as it will not see the drive.
