Help! Win32: Virtob Virus

Ugh, after installing Avast! Home Edition, it's telling me all my system files are infected with the Win32:Virtob virus and after moving 300 files to the "chest", it says the disc is full annd can't move any others so I cancelled the scan.

Surprisingly, everything still seems to work except it (supposedly) infects any exe or scr I use.

My problem is: my computer came with the OS on the HD and no CD's so I'm assuming the recovery files would be infected as well, making a(nother) reformat pointless without an XP cd. Anyone know if my assumption is correct?

In the meantime, I'm afraid to use my MP3 player, digital camera, etc as I'm wondering if the virus might not hide in those?

Any suggestions?

Doesn't sound good. The recovery files may indeed be infected too. If you want to try another route for removing, these instructions apparently worked well for at least a couple of people:

If that doesn't help, you might be out of luck, as even Avast's site says it's extremely difficult to remove.

If you end up reinstalling, make sure you do a complete system reformat first.

Have a clean PC to use? If not try to find one and make a bootable CD:

Hey look at that...we both suggested the same link! :kickass:

Also, dgridley, be sure to turn off your System Restore before attempting any further cleaning.

And if/when you get it clean, install ThreatFire -- it'll help catch malware activity like this before they spread.

Looks like I may have a busy weekend ahead of me.. I'm off Sat-Tues... I may have to wait to buy a fresh XP disc but will look into removing it first. So many system files are infected, doesn't look good. In the meantime, everything is working.

Try this this free online virus scanner

http://housecall.trendmicro.com

click on scan now its free.

It does take a while for a full scan as it has to download but it has never let me down to clear / heal any nasty trojan or virus that has managed to sneak into a machine.

good luck I hope this works for you

Install Kaspersky trail version and scan with it. Its the best one so far I have found for these pesty trojans.

When I was on Windows I used the free trial of Panda Antivirus. It found much more than any other AV I had tried, and fixed everything.

Dave,

Have you executed the "boot scan" option of avast? (during install you've been asked that)

If not, deactivated the "restore" option in windows and schedule a bootscan in avast,(open avast-click on the menu-schedule boot time scan, make sure that you scan archive files) it will then perform the scan before windows starts.

No need to buy a new copy, if you need an XP iso i can put it up for download, just pm me(and no, this would NOT be piracy or illegal because he would use his OWN Serial# what came with his machine) :)

Cheers,

Frank

I tried the boot scan and it couldn't repair the infection, plus it found so many infected files it couldn't quarantine them all.

I finally decided to take a chance and reformat and install from the partition. I reinstalled and scanned with Norton and no infection was found. Hopefully I solved the problem but now I have to reinstall all the apps I had on my C; drive, ugh!

I am glad you figured it out, even it is a P.I.T.A to re-install all apps....

Don't forget to make an image(Acronis Diskmanager works just fine but Norton Ghost is doing the job as well) after you installed all, saves you a bunch of time & nerves :)

Cheers,

Frank

Sorry to hear about your troubles dgridley. I see now you've solved the problem but for future knowledge if you could have got hold of an XP installation XP (some would argue that even if you don't have the disc, as long as you have the license there's no reason you shouldn't download the installation software and burn one yourself) then the repair option may have worked. If I remember right the XP repair option completely replaces system files which may well have helped.

What type of computer is it? Dell, sony, HP, ect.

Also you can get a recovery disk from from the people that made the computer if its still under warranty, if its not free its like $10 or something.

If you don't mind, you could get the CD key of your current windows XP. There is some tools allowing u to do that.
Then download a XP cd (by some ways ;)), install it with your legal CD key.

You will have a Fresh Windows XP :bingo:
