Need Advice - Dynadot Lock-Out

Hi all. I have a strange problem, and I hope someone has some insight on how I can deal with this...

I've spent about $166.00 using Dynadot's drop-catch system over the past couple months.

One of the reasons I was catching domains was to resell them. I recently sold a domain I caught using Dynadot for the first time, and went about getting the information so the buyer could transfer to their preferred registrar.

Roadblock #1: Dynadot requires you to "unlock" your account before you can transfer domains. This requires you to enter your birth date. I know my own birth date, but was told I was inputting the wrong date!

Account couldn't be unlocked...

Roadblock #2: Dynadot lets you "reset" your birth date. I figured I might've accidentally typo'd the information when signing up. To do this, you have to answer your secret question.

I have a different secret question for every site I sign up with. Paranoia, I guess. Anyway, I don't know if it was a capitalization issue or, again, a typo... but my secret answer was rejected too. This happens to me sometimes, I take two or three attempts before I nail down what answer I put.

With one "wrong guess", I was now locked out of changing my birth date and was told to contact Dynadot...

Roadblock #3: Though Dynadot got back to me soon, I was told the only way to unlock the birthday reset was to e-mail them a scan of a Government issued ID.

I don't drive  so I don't have one.

I told them I'd be able to send the username, password, and last 4 digits of the card I used to put funds in my Dynadot account, since that's sort of standard practice.

They havn't replied in about 48 hours.

Roadblock #4: Okay, so I checked out their contact page and called the support phone number.

The nice lady on the phone essentially said there was nothing that could be done over the phone, that it had to be over e-mail, etc.

So what do I do? Anyone have experience with Dynadot and/or these issues?

I know my own birth date! Anyone else find theirs mysteriously "incorrect" when unlocking their account?

PS. I had to refund the money on the domain I sold when it became clear I couldn't solve this issue in a timely manner...

I have found dynadots phone support nearly useless in the past.
Go get a identification card, that sounds like your only chance right now!

Ha ha, I was afraid of that! :D

I wonder if they'd accept a library card...

That's going to be a NO!

You have been locked out of unlocking it for security reasons
and unless you can talk your way around it on the phone, your going to have to do this!

It happens.Try and figure out how to better manage your security answers, etc.

Did you ever provide them with a birthdate? If no, try 12/31/69 and 01/01/70. Long-shots, but may work.

Also, be sure you're entering the birthdate in the format they want. Do they ask for day, month, year separately? -or is it just one blank?

If only one blank, maybe they want hyphens between, or slashes, or nothing (ie. 113074), and/or want the year as 2 digits, or 4. So many different date input possibilities - double-check to be sure you're entering in the way they want.

As for the security question ... wait 24 hours and then retry to see if it allows you another guess ... if still no good, wait another 24 hours and retry from a different IP and different computer.

You don't have a passport ?

I've never had a problem with a wrong birthday at Dynadot. It does sound like you brought most of this on yourself.

I would think you'd have a passport to scan to them. I don't blame your forgetting the security details! Comes with age (or youth), and you are not alone! :guilty:

Never had probs with Dynadot anyway. Hope it gets sorted for you!

Domagon - Yeah, it's a drop-down format. I would have to have given them the date in order for the form to process. No clue why it's saying the Bday is wrong - the only explanations would be a glitch on their end, or I mis-clicked. Like trying for 05 and hitting 06 by mistake.

sdsinc - Of course not, I'm American! lol

stub - Not very helpful. :) If you count making an honest mistake as "bringing it on yourself" then I guess I'm guilty. So is everyone - including you - because none of us has lived without making a single mistake. So really what's the point of blaming?

bulkdomainz - You mean there are places to go outside the U.S.? But I've heard they're dangerous! :D lol

Anyway, a small update...

I contacted Dynadot via their help chat this morning and was told my problem was being passed along since no one in chat can help.

I figured that would happen, but I wanted to exhaust all options.

So that was 12 hours ago and nothing has changed, not even that long awaited email reply.

To summarize...

I'm e-mailing them from the address associated with the account, I can give them the name and password for the account, I can give them the card number associated with the account, I can call them from the phone number on the account, and I can give them the secret question answer if I get more than one guess... Heh.

But they'll only accept a picture ID which can be stolen, photoshopped, and more.

Ok. Just visited Dynadot's signup page and I see what you mean. Try reversing the day and month ... ie. if your birthday is 11 02 try 02 11.

Does Dynadot ask for the security question at the same time they ask for birthday? If so, then, perhaps, even if the birthday entered is really right, they always say it's wrong if the security answer entered is wrong.

You may want to get a state issued photo id, regardless, since it's helpful in many situations.

As for getting a passport - it's easier to get one way ahead of time then right before an international trip, which can include a mundane border crossing, since even that typically requires having one these days.

On a related note, regarding the OP not having a passport - the vast majority of U.S. citizens don't have one; no need in the 4th largest and 3rd most populous country (land: after China, Canada, and Russia; population: after India and China) in the world.

This happens to me sometimes, I take two or three attempts before I nail down what answer I put.

The point of a secret question is that it has one answer that only you know, lol.
Then again, I NEVER use my real birthday month OR year...because I'm ultra paranoid.
An image of a Government ID makes no sense to me because it proves nothing so I would

Send another email FROM THE ACCOUNT EMAIL.
Post in the forum saying you've done this and why - it seems to me they monitor that more than pure email.

Yeah, I've been e-mailing them from the address associated with the account. I'll try their forum - I didn't think of that, since usually it's a "peer assistance" thing with these types of companies, etc.

As for the secret question... mia culpa. Heh.

I use different questions with each site just because if someone guesses the answer to one, they still can't get anywhere with the others. :) I do it with passwords, too, on sites that have my monitary info. I have those down pat, though.

The funny thing is DynaDot probably lets you have more than one try at your password... Heh.
