I wouldn't bother if it is a personal site. Even if they develop it they'll just leak traffic to you.

There's too much emphasis in this industry on registering extensions other than .com .

If we look at popular websites like Facebook in example: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/facebook.net , there really isn't all that much of a traffic leak.

Important for a large company who doesn't want confusion among customers, but for a small company or individual owning the .com, someone developing the .net will more likely than not increase traffic to your site.

So you're telling me that if someone develops the .net, nobody who is told about the site is going to forget it was .net and type .com?

I was saying if Facebook.com was the personal site, and Facebook.net was the hugely-popular site, the .com would get tons of traffic that was leaked from the .net.

I would'nt bother if its just a personal site, when you build your site you could try and put a little extra emphasis on the .com extension (in the logo etc) and place a "bookmark this site" link in a prominent place on each page.

Either way, if they're looking for you and end up on another extension chances are they'll just start looking again :D

If you care about having your name TLDs just register the rest, i.e. .org Costs a few bucks - not a big deal.
