I did some research into this, but it's still somewhat unclear to my non-legal brain how to look at this. Celebrity domain names. I have found that there are trademark and bad faith issues if it comes down to disputes and legalities, which I'm sure we would all want to avoid. I came across one that might have some ground to stand on, so it's why I bring it up.

Just doing some browsing the other day, I decided to look up the site for a rock musician that has been well known for at least 30 years. Actually, he was an inspiration for me to try my hand at guitar. I was pretty shocked when I went to what should have been the tld for something like an official site for him; the site is one page, and the domain name is for sale.

There are, obviously, some fan sites with his name, and one with a hyphenated version of his name stating they are not affiliated with him. I think I was kind of blown away by this.

I went to archive.org to look up the history for the domain, and it's pretty bleak, like it hasn't really been utilized much; in fact, there is a 3 year span where no site/pages are even listed.

I would like to do an ownership history on the domain, if anyone knows how to obtain one. The current owner is not published in domain lookups.

Since the domain has never really been developed and promoted, and is for sale, would it be safe to think that the actual person has no interest in using it? I really can't find any contact information for the person to check into this, or know if that is really a good option to follow. If nothing else, if the price is more than I can afford or if I decide not to pursue it, just let them know that someone has it and is selling it.

Actually, he was an inspiration for me to try my hand at guitar.

It probably works better if you use both hands instead, although Jerry Garcia was missing a finger.

But the answer, put simply, is "don't".

Take his advice... the general rule of thumb is to not use those names.
