What to do?

What would you do if you sold a site about a year ago, but you never gave over the domain to the owner and you have lost complete contact with him, (he hasn't contacted me and I haven't been able to contact him)?

The site has been down for a while now .. should I put it back up under my name and if he contacts me, hand over the files?

Well i would try to get the domain name to him. How did he pay you? You can probably go through however he paid you to find out some contact info.

He disappeared before I could send him the domain. I've tried using the paypal details (email name etc) to contact him but had no luck

If it was a year ago, then YOU had to renew the registration, right? If the buyer has made no attempt to get ahold of you, they were not interested or able to renew the domain, and it would have expired. If you renewed it, anyone else in the word could have re-registered it after it expired too. You would have no obligation to hand it over at that point. So it's really your call...

^^ the topic creator......he got paid for something without even giving it out.

It reminds me of that thread where a particular person sold the same domain thrice each time picking it up on expiring.

Yes but if the owner got in contact with him he'd have to hand it over then probably pay for the new reg.

Personally I suggest you try a bit more on contacting the person (did he ever change whois (if he had any access to of course), do you know of any other domains he has).

This is a failling on his part but also a failling on your part for not getting the domain transferred when it was sold (fair enough there may well be legitimate reasons).

He asked me to transfer the files to his host, so I did. I still had the domain in my possession so I could set up the nameservers, the next day I'm finished with transferring the site but I still have the domain, never saw him again.

From what you say, it sounds like you haven't done an awful lot of work to track him down. This also comes down to ethics as well. It'd be fair of you of course to expect a remuneration for the renewal

Hi guys I've been reading this thread and it came to my attention about selling a website. I'm still pretty new with Domain names but have know about it for a while. My question is if you sell a website, does the domain name sold together with the website or sold separately? To put it another way, Is it possible to keep the domain name and sell only the website content?

it is possible but unusual to sell content without the domain name.

Not many people would be willing to buy content only unless there was some specific value such as they wanted the script or maybe wanted to kick start their own site.

It is more normal to sell a domain without content. Sometimes if the content does not hold any real value this may happen (or maybe the buyer just does not want it for some reason).
