I was not able to list my domain for the queue yesterday as the queue was open only before 30mins of the auction.
The auction began at around 9:00 GMT.My local time(Indian Standard time) the time was 2:30 AM.How on earth am i supposed to come online at that time?
I am still a teen who has to go to School etc..
In my country ,there is a lot of value for ethics. Also parents have a lot of control over their children.
So when i asked my Dad if could stay up till 2:00Am just to list my domain for auction, i just got thrashed badly.I had no option but to sleep.I even sent a PM to -RJ- requesting him to do something about it.Now i am feeling sick.I missed the auction in the first place and i could not even list my domain name.

I request -RJ- to implement the following suggestions.
Please open the auction queue 12 hours before the auction.
Since there are 2 auction held in a month, the timings should be different for each of the auctions.
The first one can be held at 9:00 PM GMT as it was held yesterday.
The second one can be held 3:00 PM GMT on a Saturday.
In this way members from all timezones are benfitted.

So many fighing for so few slots. If there were more slots this could get out of hand. Even with it open 30 minutes, things can get out of hand, as it is.

It's going to be the "wrong" time for someone, somewhere, when you have a wold-wide membership. Sorry, just luck has it it falls on a bad time for you.

Sorry dad took it so strongly. But, as stated, no matter when time was set, some junior (teen) members would still have this issue. And, school and sleep are more important to your future, IMHO.

Maybe he'll see this, and can be creative in thinking of a way to help.

You could always do what many do (kids who sleep this time of day/night, or adults who have to work during auctions), and get a trusted NP member who will be there to auction/list name(s) for you .

Something to think about. Just not sure RJ or admins, who reside in US, can be there to manage it during those other times. I can't speak for them.

The time is something which has come up again and again and unfortunately, It will never suit everyone.. I actually find 10pm gmt not great either as I have a family whom dont share my computer passion :hehe: but I try and make it whenever I can...

I did personally think opening the queue 24 hours before or 12 cant remember was better for me as this gave me time to do some research into the names.

I must admit, I too would prefer it being opened much longer before the auction (a good 6 hours or so before)

Are all the staff only from 1 time zone?

I doubt it, why can't there be a variation?

So - wait a second, is NP supposed to have the auction at a certain time just to accomodate your sleeping habits?

keep in mind where most of the namepros members are on the other side of the world... changing auction times for a kid at the expense of all the grownups on the hemisphere.... ehh.... i don't know about that. there are members all over the world, and it would be impossible to fit everyone's schedule anyway, but the auction times are more or less maximized as they are right now.

in my country, kids can be really unreasonable at times and think it's their birthright to get whatever they want. this seems to be a constant around the world too ;).

for buyers, proxy bids might be the trick.

Well, as a matter of fact,I'm from India, am not a kid, and I missed the auction too. IMO, we should have probably more auctions every month, and give some Support Staff the responsibility (who'd be comfortable with the time) .

Maybe what would be nice is instead of a 2x a month auction have a First of the month auction and have it all day long.

Major auctions like traffic and such last a few hours but they choose to cut it off short. If Namepros would promote it to the fullest you would be able to submit say a maxium of 200 names and meet somesort of criteria like a min amount of post, NP$ etc.

I feel auctions are GREAT to get good names and make some side change. if these little ones bring this much attn imagine one thats done 1x a month for the SERIOUS domainer.

Also a side not...PLEASE cut down the chatter during an auction....I suggest no comments during the auction. It would not be allowed to chat it up so much in a REAL auction...lets treat it like one and maybe others will take it serious as well.

It's always going to be the wrong time for someone. As you can see from this link, nearly 70% of Namepros users are from the US or Canada. 1.2% are from India.

The members in India are just as important as the members in the US and Canada, but would you rather have 70% of Namepros upset, or 1.2% of Namepros upset?

I think the choice is pretty obvious...

good info epic.

also, the prob with a auctions that go on longer than a few hours, is that people who want to bid on domain 3, 28, and 59 don't know when to sit at their computer to bid, and i doubt they want to check in every half an hour just in case. this is also bad on a seller's side, as they would want all possible bids to get in, and having someone live at the auction bidding is more likely to increase the final price.

ya its always going to be wrong time for someone .. but can we make it wrong time for the western world once and wrong time for the eatern world? so that we in the east do not have to suffer in both the auctions

Those stats are old for starters..
Second.. I think a change up in time would be beneficial for everyone. Allowing for a different member base to visit the auctions on different time adds change to it.The highest domain payers are probably in US. But for me for example the 5PM is right on supper time so I would prefer later or earlier.. But RJ might not be able to make it.

There is a lot of reasons why the auctions are on a Friday night at 5PM EST. I'm sure most have to lie with RJ being the auctioneer.. If he was to open it up and let others auction once in awhile. We could probably have some different times, until than we have to enjoy the auction we have. It isn't meant to please everyone and I know RJ tries to make it the best time for everyone possible.

As for the earlier auction opening.. I do think that 6 hours or so would be much better than 30 minutes before.. Why? It isn't because of the fighting. It is because if somebody in another part of the world has a good domain and is willing to bid abit more to auction it. Than we get the good domain. It isn't about the amount of fighting over spots. It is about having the best domains for auctions and in order to do that you need to include the biggest audience possible.

By the way if anyone wants a domain listed, I attend every auction and I will offer to list it for you. RJ is very busy :P.

- Steve

If the listing is 6 hours earlier, this would mean the listing would be at 11:00am EST. That would only make more problems and more crying from a larger user base. 12 hours earlier would mean at 5am, so... The queue is normally filled in about one minute, so that just can't happen.

I'd say sorry India, because I don't think anything can really change.

busiest day on ebay is Sunday, I think they should be moved to saturday or sunday as this will eliminate a lot of complaints regarding school or work schedules and allow more people to attend, more bidders=more bids, assuming someone is available to run it on the weekend.

Maybe NamePros could look into having staff in other locations manage additional auctions...that seems like the best and easiest way to handle it.

I agree.
I hope they recruit a new Staff member from India.

The NP moderation and staff team are spread around the world, so there is an almost 24/7 moderation of the forum.

We cannot have lots of auctions, otherwise it will remove the fun from it all, it's a special event we all enjoy.

I'm sure different times could be looked at, but, say US/UK/Canada are sleeping, how many people would turn up?

The auction can be held when the US is wide awake and on Saturdays or Sundays when everybody is free.
