How can Namecheap cancel an auction after the auction is already over/won.
Is this legal or ethical practice?

Expired domain name auctions are typically started before the domain name expires, during the redemption period, and so it is possible for an auction to end early if the current registrant renews the domain or even for a refund to be issued after the auction ends and a winner has paid. If you participate in GoDaddy auctions, you will encounter this with maybe 25% of all domains that go to auction. That said, my understanding of Namecheap's exclusive access to expired .ai domains is that they only auction .ai domains after they have been dropped (meaning they cannot be renewed).

Was this an expired domain auction, or was it a user-initiated marketplace auction?

Thank you for your information.
Yes this is expired domain auction... I was just wondering if anything fishy b/c I won the bid with low price.... I had been suspicious of Namecheap's premium domain sale practice in the past, so I am wondering anything suspicious about their auction also.

There is definitely something off about this. It has happened quite a few times before for domains won at Namecheap to not get transferred to the winning bidder and just follow the expire process (ie. move on to the drop phase, etc.) with the auction getting a 'cancelled' status and no explanation given.
