This is my first time putting names on backorder on Namejet, and here are some surprises I got today.

1. I put seven names on backorder. Six of them have multiple bidders (fine), but they all say "Reserve not Met". Maybe there was something on Namejet site that I overlooked because I do not recall being adviced that those names may have a reserve (which apparently is very high).

2. On one of the names I was the only bidder by the time the pre-release expired. Now I keep bidding and it says Reserve not Met, and stating that there are two bidders, which make me think the RESERVE is being counted as a bidder, therefore, I am competing against computer.

3. I call Namejet and explain the situation. The person who answers is surprised when I mention RESERVE and says that he has to ask someone else about it. When he comes back, he says that those names have reserves, that I should keep bidding until the reserve is met.

Are there any good names that you could ever backorder on Namejet and really acquire, if you are the only bidder, by the price advertised as the backorder price?

I suppose the names in question that have a reserve are from a private portfolio.

Well Tucows, Register, and Moniker, all specify that their domains will go to a public auction once a bid is placed on Snapnames for Pre-Release domains. This means that even with only one bid on the domain, it will go to a public not private auction for 3 days. You don't ever win it outright because you were the only bidder.

also at Tucows, they have a tendency to renew any good domains for themselves and withdraw them from auction. so don't be surprised if you bid on a Tucows registered domain and don't ever win it. because they do that a lot.

Is it at one of these Registers? I believe they have the ability to set a minimum price when they specify that it will go to a public auction.

Some domains at Namejet are for a private portfolio. Most are real pre-release domains and if you bid $69 you will get it unless there are multiple bidders, then you will be in an auction for 3 days.

Just go to domaintools.com before you bid on a domain. If the domain is not expired then it's probably a private owner.

Thanks for the suggestion.
