Multiple Year Registration

I noticed at GoDaddy that they encourage multiple year registration for the sake of establishing the domain as legitimate. Sure, they are selling the service so they want the years, but I wonder, is there any truth to this? Does say, Google or any other search engine determine domain/site validity by the expiration date on the domain registration? I know that longevity of a site produces good PR and establishes a site as "valid" but a brand new site that is regged out 4 years....hmmm, I wonder.

Any thoughts?

Just like paying for web hosting in advance, paying for domains in advance is not a good idea. If you are really going to keep the site and you are really going somewhere with it then renew it before it even expires for how many years but to register it for more then one year when you first get is not a good idea, IMO.

I think so to a minor degree, if you find a business site and see that they have been around a few years and then you see that their domain is registered years in advance it could show that they are serious and have plans for the future and it can also show that they have the spare cash to register their domains years in advance as well. Anyone can close up shop tommorrow but I think it adds a small percentage of credibility.

I reg them for a year, then, if I develop it in to something successful/good, I'll register it for the maximum time ;)

The only time to register for a longer term is if you have long-term plans for
the domain itself, of course.

I always register for a year.

I´m also managing a domain-portfolio for the company I´m working at, then I usually register for maximum period, or atleast 5 year for .com/.net´s.

I have a few at GoDaddy on auto renew, and have for a few years. Figured that was good enough. I may reconsider that for some like PlanetBurrito.com and my other "staple" domains and reg for multiple years just in case. :)

Multiple year registrations might force the hand of someone who wants to buy your domain name. They might wait one year but they won't wait 3-5 years.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't know how true that might be or how many times you might run into that, but once may be enough to pay for it all. Sure is something to consider when registering domains you KNOW are good. :)
