Hi,

I have amassed over 100 domain names over the pass 4 years. I have been pulling in a modest $50 a month from parking. My question is:

Should I register these domains for 10 years at a time and save on the cheap registration or keep paying year by year?

The trend seems that registering now for 10 years will be cheaper than registering in 2020 for 10 years. Dot Com will definetly incease in price over the long run to push people to buy other tld's.

I think people are going to make their money by registering domains for cheap and by 2020 - 2050, people are gonna wonder how could you have so many domain names because the price is to high.

Thanks.

Where are you registering your domain names? There are renewal codes at many registrars allowing for cheap registrations without needing to front roughly $7,500. for 100 renewals for 10 years. You also assuming that parking revenues will remain - when the industry has seen a substantial dip in parking every year.

If most are in .COM, then renewing them yearly may be better for the time being.

But keep an eye out on news regarding VeriSign's registry contract and pricing cap for .COM... there are discussions about removing the pricing cap - if that happens, prices could skyrocket!

And for those thinking that competition will help - nope! There is no alternative, since this is at the registry level - pricing at the registrar level (GoDaddy, eNom, etc) is dictated by whatever the registry (VeriSign) is charging them along with ICANN.

Bottom line is for now, renewing yearly in .COM is likely the better way to go, especially in light of the changing parking landscape, but keep an eye on contract changes / renewal discussion regarding the .COM registry operator. If it appears the pricing cap is likely to come off .COM, then at that time, start renewing them for the longest period possible.

Cap

If the pricing cap goes...Well it's a no brainer.

A 10 year investment can be profitable or lead to ruin. However, if you have the capital to register for 10 years at a time and can recover the costs when reselling them, it may be very much worth it.

Thanks for all the comments.

I would focus on developing the domains instead of worrying about registration fees.

If its me, I will reg year-on-year.
I feel you must not lock your money there.
Instead, invest on domains that can fetch you good money.

I would first ask yourself how much you are spending annually. Maybe it's time to trim the portfolio a little. Secondly, are you paying rock bottom $7.75 per name per year or are you getting hijacked by a registrar that wants double that?

I would focus on increase that parking by setting up your own parking with your Google and Yahoo account or whatever else. So you can make more than that $50.

If you already did that, then develop a few names at a time.
Don't do it for all 100 names. Do a max of 2 years for your best names so you will be keeping them.
Other than that, the future in 10 years will change. Why pay for registration at 10 years when you don't have to?

Do 2 years max, for your best names. Or 5 if its something you don't want to lose.

year by year is better if you sell your domains.
