Sex.com: One Domain, Two Men, Twelve Years and the Brutal Battle for the Jewel in the Internet's Crown

Paperback โ€“ May 17, 2007

by Kieren M McCarthy (Author)

4.2 out of 5 stars

4.2 on Goodreads

With five million page views every day, sex.com was the most valuable piece of virtual real estate on the planet. But the fact that it didn't physically exist didn't mean that it couldn't be stolen. With an ingenious scam-the full details of which have never been revealed until now-lifelong con man Stephen Cohen was able to snatch the domain name and walk into a life of untold wealth and luxury. But Cohen underestimated the determination of Gary Kremen-sex.com's original owner-to get his property back. It took ten years and millions of dollars, but Kremen eventually saw, and, on occasion, forced Cohen to pay for his crimes. This is the inside story of the extraordinary battle between two extraordinary men: a Stanford scholar with uncanny foresight, and an uneducated, genius con man with an unnatural gift for persuasion. The fight pushed each man to the edge, rewrote the law, and shaped the history and development of the Internet as we know it.

Not a movie, but I liked the book. I couldn't put it down.

Interesting from wikipedia:

"According to court documents, Cohen fraudulently obtained the lucrative Internet domain name Sex.com in May 1995 from the original registrant, Gary Kremen, who had registered it in May 1994. Cohen obtained the domain by means of a forged letter to domain registrar Network Solutions, faxed from Kremen's company "Online Classified", fraudulently stating that Kremen had been dismissed and the firm was abandoning the domain and that Cohen could have it. Network Solutions blindly accepted the fax with no verification and transferred the domain to Cohen, an action that would prove grounds for a later civil suit by Kremen against Network Solutions.[5] It is estimated that Cohen illegally earned US$100 million between October 1995 and November 2000 from his ownership of sex.com.

In April 2001, the court ordered damages of $65 million be paid to Kremen. Cohen left the United States in 2001 and was living in Tijuana, Mexico, when he was arrested on October 28, 2005.[6] As of 2011 the amount of damages owed to Kremen had increased to $82 million with interest and Cohen to this date, has refused to pay one penny towards the judgment.[6]

Cohen was held in a civil contempt for failure to disclose his assets. He was released from custody on December 5, 2006, by Judge Ware because "Kremen has failed to locate evidence of hidden bank accounts or other assets.โ€[7] Courts have ruled in Kremen's favor several times since 2006, with evidence that seven individuals, including some of Cohen's family members, and twelve companies were used to help him hide the money."

Hey there! I've been curious about the same thing lately. While I've seen movies about websites and startups, I haven't come across any documentaries or biographical films specifically focused on domain names. It's quite an interesting topic, considering the crucial role domain names play in the digital world. If anyone knows of such movies or documentaries, please share!

Hi, We should totally go for a Web series to tackle the wild and wacky world of the domain industry.

I mean, movies, they just can't handle the crazy rollercoaster ride of domain names, am I right? With a web series, we can dish out season after season of drama, motivation, hilarity, and all the entertainment you can dream of.

+, we'll never run out of those ever-shifting trends to keep things interesting.

Furthermore, international actors and actresses could represent domainers, adding a global perspective to the narrative. Let's bring on the laughter, the drama, and the domain madness โ€“ it's going to be a riot! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Startup.com is a good movie not strictly about domain names but interesting. Years ago I spoke to a guy I knew who worked in development for a Hollywood studio. His take and it's just one opinion, was the average person would neither understand or care. You want me to make a movie that would appeal to your community but that community is not big enough to make this movie profitable.

So I guess most out there would see a drama about domain names only as boring. Now I would think maybe Sex.com could be an indie movie if someone was compelled.

The other thing when you get outside the domain community, so many other people think it's wrong to sell someone a name for $1m I mean go on Reddit or other non domain forums. I have been places where people suggested domain investors were thrown off a cliff for simply selling domain names. So it's probably a tough sell for a movie being made in Hollywood. But maybe an indie.

Something Internet related that imo was great was Valley of the boom

I absolutely agree.

A movie about domains, at face value, might not just have the audience to be profitable, in my humble opinion.

Having said that, I find that the human angle when it comes to movies is what does it for me. From Lord of the rings to the Matrix to the Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind etc etc, the human condition is what draws me into each storyline and keeps me there and that's where I think a movie about domains might excel.

Take for instance, the story of Nissan.com. A movie about that is definitely something that will appeal to domainers as well as people who do not know anything about domains simply because it's a classic David and Goliath story.

In my opinion to make domain movies popular, some sexy and famous actors should be invited!!! ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹

I am presenting a case that the #DotNetVSDotComDebate is not over. If I am right then maybe next decade this will be a very interesting story that might make a movie. I wouldn't present this case if I didn't believe that this is a great opportunity for big money. I am arguing that .net is short for "Netters" and that this is a great nickname for buyers groups who buy at wholesale prices. I would call the movie

#NetVSCom

The world is going through huge inflation problems. This is a brilliant opportunity for a #WholesalerMovement to help lower the cost of living across the world. The infrastructure costs to build a wholesaler movement would take a few years to raise and that is why I believe that it would take a good decade for this story to evolve. I have put 15 years into wholesaler business models so far and I am convinced that this is an interesting story to see if the #DotNetVSDotCom debate can be revived and to see if the great #KingDotCom can be toppled.

I know one example about .net extension! One person registered Kamaz.ru (Russian trucks brand with Russian extension) but he registered it before Kamaz company did it! They used .net for a long time but now they own .ru extension but it is not possible to find any deal information and who owned this domain before Kamaz company!

I'm thinking a Michael Moore style documentary.

From Usenet to Useless Domains the Movie

It should have the scale of Dune with Alejandro Jodorowsky initially hired as a director, but due to UDRP Aaron Sorkin now owns the rights to direct.

Guys if any of you haven't watched Jonah Hill's War Dogs please do asapp. We need exact same film for domains. Period.

Only one I know of is a short, saw it a few years back, quite moving.

I've been thinking about this for years, but it's difficult to get something serious financed about something so niche. I think there's an angle with a docuseries a la Dirty Money, but the real juicy stories in the industry are relatively few and far between, and it would require buy-in from characters who don't necessarily like the spotlight.

Great idea. I can see a very entertaining, funny but educational, 30 minute documentary style film focused on drop catching drama. From the person that thinks he can catch a pronounceable 4L manually or using an api, to the companies that have 1000's of registrars and the people that backorder the last second as they dream nobody else noticed a pronounceable 4l is dropping. Then you have the auction with the annoying 5 minute extender bidding bot, and the guy that waited 5 years for a name to drop but refuses to spend 50-70 to catch it or the guy that didn't realize that most names will go to auction before drop and suddenly he sees his competition in control of the name that expired. You can also cover the broker that thinks he is stealth by sending an email with broken English and offering 50 bucks for a 3l.

A lot of really interesting things go on and it would be a giant hit because people love getting a glimpse into industries but it must be entertaining.

There is enough material to make a whole series but a nice short documentary would really work.

I think we'd have to simply a bit from that for the masses but definitely some plot twists here to inject
