Using Overture Tool before buying.

Hi,

I know there has been many threads about overture but could i ask some more questions please to experienced domainers.

I have been re-thinking how i buy my domains so now for my next lot of domains im making overture my main concern.

My Questions are:

What do you regard as Decent to High Overture - I dont mean for names selling at thousads of dollars, just enough type in traffic to make a few $ while parked before i work on development.

I have been looking around and found around 5 names with overture around 5,000 - 10,000 and 2 domains with overture of 100,000+.
ALl the domains i have found are on subjects i fell i could develop and are reasonably catchy.

My gut feeling is i should register the names with 100,000 overture as i havent seen many .com's available to reg with anywhere near that overture but id like some wisdom from experienced domainers before i spend any cash.

If anyone could share their past buys and how they look at overture before buying then id really appreciate it. I'm fairly new to this business and own around 15 names just now but would like more but im really trying to research before buying again so i get best value for money.

Has anyone bought a domain with lets say 5,000 overture or 10,000 overture...etc
Can you tell me what kind of type in traffic you got for names with this overture.

Thanks in advance for anyone to share their views, experience and wisdom. What i am really looking for here is the benefit of experienced domainers on what domains they have bought in past, why they bought them and if they proved to be a success.

I am not sure if i am looking at overture from the corrct angle or if im missing something so any advice on how others use overture would be great.

In my short time in the domains/websites business i have learnt so much from Namepros members who are always keen to share their wisdom and help newbies from making some errors through inexperience. I have never known any other forum where experienced Pro's in their field would spend so much time helping others, Thanks to all you guys who offer help & advice.
Through working on my main website which is a gambling site i spend lots of time on gambling forums and the difference in attitude is amazing compared to here. Experienced gamblers dont share their wisdom with the younger guys even though they know that some of the novice gamblers are losing lots of cash.
I personally am really glad on the great attitude in this forum, i am sure many other people like myself who arent experienced domainers really benefit from this too.

Thats enough of me typing away forever and a day, when i start typing i just cant stop!!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

theres a big difference with overture w/o extension and overture with extension i would buy almost any domain with an overture over 100 with extension

Thanks for reply, good to get some other people views on overture.

The way i was looking for domains was always without extension unfortunately so some of the great names i'd thought i had found arent as great.
For some reason the whole overture with or w/out extension thing wasnt clicking for me but finally i understand that bit (Scotsman are stupid sometimes)

I havent managed to find anything decent with extension but have found a few w/out with overture of 5,000+ and 1 with 100,000+ which i will be buying to develop.

Anyone else with any views, experience on buying domains with overture and maybe how past buys have went??

Thanks

It's really hard these days to find domains that have Overture w/extension because domainers all know how valuable they are. When they do come up for sale or backorder, the price is pretty high due to the competition in trying to get it. Most of the competition for these domains have deeper pockets than you and I have.

Domains w/o extension can still be good buys. But keep in mind that the high Overture score just shows that lots of people are searching for that term. If you're planning to park the domain, then it could pay pretty well depending on whether there is a lot of competition among advertisers. In other words, you could get a domain that will pay you over $1 per click on a parked page. But you can't rely on the Overture search numbers to tell you whether that keyword will pay well on clicks. Advertisers are getting smarter and are not as likely now, as in the past, to pay high per-click prices for one- or two-word keywords.

Ah, yes, we domainers dream of the olden days when domaining was much simpler....

Thanks for replies, glad i finally understand difference between Overture with & w/out extension before i went and regged a big bunch of names id found with decent Overture w/out ext with idea of parking them and forgetting about them.

The way im looking at things now is to Only buy domains i've got time to develop, im sure many of us have made the mistake of buying a big bunch of names with plans to develop/sell and then life gets in the way and before you know it the reg fee is due again and the domains are worthless.

Im only buying 1 at a time, doing a few checks before i buy now to give me the best chance of success (iu hope)

1: Checking Overture of domain, i'll be buying something without extension and i've found a few with overture of at least 50,000 which i think is good.

2: Using the View Bids Tool http://uv.bidtool.overture.com/d/search/tools/bidtool/index.jhtml to see what i might get in PPC ads if i use them.

3: Using one of the many websites that give you all round domain Stats like Age, Backlinks, Pagerank (if any), Search Engine listing/position...etc

4: Using Internet Archive (just found you could do this, great Tool!!) http://www.archive.org/web/web.php Using this tool you can check what was on the website you were looking at in past, gives you a good idea if domain had been developed.

I think doing these 4 checks before i buy any domains in future will help lots, if anyone has any other things i should look our before regging then please post.

Thanks

One other aspect of finding valuable domains that you may have overlooked is link popularity. Very often, expiring domains still have incoming links from other websites. You can find domains with hundreds or thousands of incoming links, which will give your domain instant traffic.

One tool you can use to check a domain's link popularity is at www.seochat.com/seo-tools/link-popularity/. Be sure to check the domain as both domain.com and www.domain.com.

Once you have identified a domain with lots of incoming links, you need to find out exactly where those links are coming from. Never buy a domain just because it has lots of incoming links; 5000 incoming links are worthless if they come from worthless websites or if the incoming links are from sites that have nothing to do with what you plan to use the domain for. In other words, if you plan to use the domain for selling ebooks on internet marketing, but the bulk of incoming links are from dating websites, visitors coming from the old links won't be looking for internet marketing books and, therefore, won't be interested in staying on your page (or clicking the links on your parked page).

Here's how you research the value of those incoming links. First, use the Wayback/Internet Archive to see what kind of site the domain was associated with previously. Is it relevant to the purpose you plan for the domain? Second, you need to visit the sites linking to the domain by checking the backlinks. There's a good backlink checker at www.webuildpages.com/neat-o/. Click over to each backlink and look at the page where the link is. Is the page a low-quality, low-PR link farm? Is the page completely written in Chinese? Is it an adult website? What about the rest of the website? Again, junk links are worth $0.

On the other hand, if the links are coming from good quality sites that seem to be up-to-date, look further. What kind of traffic does the website have? Does the website have a high PR? (Don't just consider the index page of the website, but specifically look at the PR for the exact page where your domain link is.) What kind of content does the site have? Does it have lots of members? Is the content relevant to your planned use of the domain?

You need to determine if you can leverage the incoming links from the domain before you decide whether it's worth buying. You may even find that the incoming links are so valuable that you can afford to spend a lot more money to acquire the domain than you had originally planned.

Even if you're just planning to flip the domain, you can set a higher sale price on a domain that has lots of high quality incoming links.

Good luck with your endeavors. Keep coming back to NamePros to read and ask questions. It won't happen overnight, but with enough education and experience, you can become a very successful domainer.
