for those of you with developed sites how are you monitizing your video? we all know it is a hot topic with companies and video sites all over-

we have a ton of smart people here- it is an issue and people are trying to figure it out- what would be your ideal way to work this? to make it work?

what is the biggest holdback you see, and can it be overcome?

I want to start off by saying that I am not qualified in any way to answer this question - ask your doctor if you have any real questions.....

So I qualify for what its worth: There are basically three ways I can think off the top of my head to monetise video

1. Through ads - either before the video plays, after the video plays or whilst the video plays (video overlay) You will be sharing the ad income with the platform provider - usually 50% like with Revver (check out my own CARE.TV) and if you are prepared to let other publishers show your video then the split is 50% to the platform provider (Revver) 30% to the publisher and 20% to you.

Until very recently, the only way to get paid was by CPM - that is cost per thousand impressions, however just about a month ago, Google introduced overlay ads that show static ads just like adsense, but this has not yet been fully rolled out yet and is being tested with certain platform providers such as BrightCove

An excellent article on Beet.Tv covers this first method of monetisation -

http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache...st+per+thousand+view&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us

2. A second way to monetise your videos is indirectly - in fact its moree a case of your videos monetising you!!! Its simply a matter of getting together in one place on your site videos that everyone is after, a service you are providing - one of viewing convenience - word will spread about your site and
hey presto - your traffic builds up pretty fast and you can then go to advertisers for the ad dollars - supported by your traffic and traffic equals cash

3. Yet another way is for you to build up your own library of videos till you have a collection that is good enough to sell on to other publishers to put on their sites for a yearly fee. One area where this is pretty common is with how to videos, although currently eventhe how to videos are being offered free to publishers...but you get the point......

Hope that little bit helps Smash

someone else can fill in points 4-100 Iam sure

I dont strictly run 'video sites' but i have found a way to have my sites look a bit more interesting that others while making money by selling 'video ads'
Instead of a company just buying Ad space then they get a 'video ad' with their companies name, description and so on proclaimed as the 'sponsor' of a particular section of the site.
ALl i do is turn any videos into Flash, Add the companies Logo & details then get one of my Sales guys to do a voice over. It is then set to Autoplay so every single visitor to a particular section of the site notices & heres this 'video ad'

I know its not a solution for Youtube clones and so on but i thought id share how im keeping video content while making money from every possible angle.
Seems to be working so far as i just sold an Ad yesterday, getting it made today. :kickass:

hope that makes sense, im not great at explaining myself.

do you think at some point, we will see a modified player itself to bettter take advantage of monitization? i can see how it is being working into the video itself- but what about a player that goes beyond play and pause?

Thats the future Dottie, eventually videos will run and you will be able to click onany part of the video - say you notice a nice sofa in the background - well you click on it and info comes up on price/model/where you can buy it/read reviews and you can buy it immediately

Publishers get a commission of the sale as does the company that comes up with the technology to make it happen :kickass:

BTW - Who would have thought that a website about cranes could look so exciting and fresh!!! Well done Mckenronnie!!!

You can already get the video item ID thing (the one where you see something on a video, pull your cursor over it - and all the details come up).

Take a look at Ooyala.com - they were ex-Google guys who've set it up.

Cheers, will check it out......newer technology has never made new technology seem so so redundantant so fast........and its all taking place on the net.......

the in phrase at the moment is distrubtive technology...a company comes up with a great way to use proprietory technology to eaither solve a problem or allow things to be done faster, better - they then persuade VC's that they are a sure bet, get their $5,000,000

and a few moths another company comes out with their technology tha tmakes the previous one's totally redundant....Hope the fist lot had a chance to have one big spending spree before theyfind themselves standing at the breadline!!

But mercilessly, for us we end up the winners, may the strongest survive, because that means as consumers, the very best technology won through....

there are three current models for monetizing any content (including video)

1) Pay Per Impression - Tough since you need 1000X video views to get standard CPM rates. Even if video demands a premium CPM rate, that is still alot of views for small investors

2) Pay Per Click - View the video. Click to get more information by visiting the company's web site

3) Pay Per Lead or Pay Per Action - See the Video. People are interested in contacting the company. They fill out a form, call a phone number that redirects to the business (allowing you to charge the business), or some other action like getting a quote from the business.

for example, the user sees a video on a limo company. Wants a real time quote. They click the video or click a link underneath the video and request a quote or schedule an appointment to get more info from the video company.

I think 1) requires scale and with even with scale, showing 1000 video views to get $25 I would imagine the bandwidth costs eat deeply into your profits.

2) is run by Google and Yahoo.

We run 3). We wouldn't have a business if 3) wasn't superior in revenue generation per visitor than 2).

Why doesn't everyone run 3), tough model to run. But with risk, yields reward.

GP is 100% correct on this for most online video areas. Trying to make serious money on a 1/5/10/20 CPM takes almost unimaginable scale.

in other words, to make a mere $1M in revenue (not profit) at a 5CPM, means 200M impressions if I am doing my math right which is has to be about the hardest slogging in world history to make $1M. I bet I could scale up lemonade stands faster / easier to $1M in revenue than get 200M views.
