Reminder:
China has two immediate goals pertaining to the internet by year's end 2009:
More computers in china than the total combined in the world.
More .cn registrations than any other TLD or ccTLD
It will achieve both. Perhaps before the end of 2009.
China (the number one population in the world) and India (the number 2 population in the world) are both pushing for the use of their own language and native script. There is a revised and updated form of IDN being promoted.
There has been talk (just talk) about the possibility of an IDN adaptable mobi.
Dot com will continue to be huge and popular. But in sheer numbers it will not be the most populated. With the emphasis and shift dictated by other nations dot com will become in less demand and used. The only difference will be a monumental increase in IDN type domains. English word dot com will remain strong and popular, to the English speaking nations.
The internet is about to become a very fractured and broken up mess. What I just outlined is not speculation but paraphrasing reports and news from the global wires and trends. To continue to ignore the power and influence of the number one and number two populations and arguably the number one and two economic powerhouses is foolish. Plus, they do NOT have to play by anyone's rules other than the rules they set. China has already dictated to all government offices in China to abandon the .com and use the .cn. I assure you there is 100% compliance.
There are already more than 250 TLD's and ccTLD's and talk of even adding more. That is insane.
There needs to be a unifying and common extension that ties the knot in this long string of domain extensions.
With an estimate 3.5-4 billion cell phones currently in use and a projected 7 billion by 2010, guess which extension will be that unification extension.
I invite you to do your own research. I invite you to disprove my very brief synopsis of the future of domain usage and internet growth.
In the state of North Carolina, residents can now choose one of seventy-seven license plate designs. WHY...I can't even tell where my neighbors are from anymore.
How to promote .mobi utilizing methods outside of the internet:
Another site that I developed and maintain is a specialty niche medical education site. I already had plans of doing a direct mailing campaign promoting the FREE educational opportunities.
Anything of this nature is not typically tossed upon receipt at hospitals. In most instances, 3 cards are going to each hospital...one each to the directors of nursing, radiology, and respiratory. Those are the three biggest users. Already for 2007, I have surpassed 225,000 users. There were a total of 355,000 in 2006.
The cards are addressed to each of these department head along with the sticker PLEASE POST FOR FREE EDUCATION CREDITS. I assure you, they will get posted at time clocks, bulletin boards, copies made and circulated and memos sent via the hospital intranet.
There is an estimated 7000-9000 hospitals in the USA. That equates to approximately 21,000-27,000 postcards. 9000 have been printed. These are heavy card stock beautiful glossy cards with printing on both sides.
800 have already been mailed out...but there was one addition made:
Thus far, the cards have gone out to the states of SC, NC, VA, AL, with En-Route. I placed a similar sticker for Boroughs on the cards mailed to NY, and NJ.
Six states down, 44 and DC to go.
I don't have anything running that actually measures the usage of the site, I'll figure that out. But my AdMob account tells me that I had 1032 hits in June on the AdMob.
The owner of Boroughs can relate his results should he wish.
On my site, I have also been putting together a DIRECTORY of sorts for the promotion of .mobi and several sites are listed. Sorry if I have delayed in getting them active. (please, do not contact me as I have been swamped). If it is out there, I will find you.
There is an outside chance that Canada and India will be included. I have been contacted by folks in both nations that they use the same continuing education credits my site lists but I have not gotten any response from the official governing bodies regulating health care workers and acceptance of these.
A while back I mentioned I am not waiting on anyone to carry or promote me. I am not waiting for this site, that site, mTLD, or anyone one else to push mobi and carry me along for the ride. I am creating my own ride with plans that were already in motion.
Is this money well spent? Postcards, stamps, postage, labor to address, cost of materials, cost of labels?
You better believe it. Cards like this do not get tossed. Trust me on this. I see them posted all the time. I see copies of copies posted. I could spend money on promoting my site on the internet. But I do not need to. And I won't be subjected to click fraud. And my site already owns the number 1,2,3,and 7 spot on Yahoo and the number 1 and 3 spot on Google for the search terms.
How will this pay for itself? When the numbers are astronomical, then I will go into the direct email campaign to the Human Resource Department. I will be selling adspace complete with hospital logo and direct link to their job postings on an annual subscription. With a nationwide shortage of every profession and heated competition for qualified personnel, this is a win-win for me and the institution. Imagine exposing your jobs to millions of healthcare workers in all professions.
In order not to break the bank, I have divided the country up in regions. I will finish the southeast. Then I will contact those hospitals. I have the states of Tennessee and Georgia addressed and labeled ready to go. That leaves Florida and Mississippi.
Wait for Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans, San Diego, Dallas, and Fort Worth, Washington DC to be released to the world? Not a chance.
What they will have is LAL (LALiving).mobi, Cubby.mobi, BourbonSt.mobi, SDCA.mobi, FortWorthTX (and FWTX).mobi, DeCe.mobi to use and long before mTLD makes up their mind. And guess how those sites will be promoted?
So who has heard of .mobi?
By the time I am finished, tens of millions of well paid, fun loving, like to travel and party health care professionals will have their first exposure to .mobi.

99% (maybe 99.9) of the population probably hasn't even heard of .mobi ...
.mobi has a long way to go.
Perhaps 99.99% of 2.5-3 billion cell phones in use today have internet capability.
