.mobi MOBI vs COM

Hi guys is it possible to start a debate about the mighty .com vs .mobi ?

I believe that .mobi will become far stronger than the .com in the next few years.

One of my main reasons for believing this is as follows;

1. The ratio of mobile phones to pc's.

2. The restrictions of employers allowing their staff the use of pc's. Time is money!

3. The screen size restrictions of mobile phone's.

4. The lack of time available in a day to access home pc's. Kids are always on the pc.

5. The mobile phone technology is getting better exponentially.

6. I am sure the carbon footprint of a mobile is less than a pc.

7. There is only one domain extension designed for the mobile, but many extension's for pc's. I would say watering down the value of domains with multiple extension's. This maybe why some people are so negative about .mobi's.

Fail is a subjective word IMO... Relative to .com, all extensions created to date have failed. That being said, would Sex.net be considered a "failure" selling for $454,000? What about Date.org selling for $150,000? NAV.no selling for ~$700,000? Cruises.co.uk selling for ~ $180,000 or Video.us selling for $75,000?

I certainly wouldn't call any name regged/bought for <$100 and flipped for >$10,000 to be anything other than a fantastic sale. IMO, none of these extensions are failures, nor will dotmobi be one. Will it be the next .com? Probably not. Will we see many more sales >$10,000 for names currently owned by NP'ers in the future? I sure think so

Not even close. I'm very much a mobi enthusiast but I find this statement to be preposterous.

In order to maintain a professional and business like atmosphere for .mobi forum its best to refrain from using these kind of words, as it gives the impression that you are punishing the OP for expressing his opinion. You can still indicate your disagreement by saying that you find that statement “ unacceptable “ or “ unreasonable “ or “ far fetched “ or even “ illogical “ without giving your post a negative tone. IMO

If you want mobi to succeed, build and advertise. Make people think when visiting sites on their phones they *have* to use a .mobi extention. Thats the key.

Ok guys this is how IMO i see the future and direction of .mobi and why i believe this;

People are obsessed with their phones, they take them where ever they go, they cannot do without them, they are more than an accessory. Its almost as though they are part of them.
I beleive the obsession with the .mobi extension will be seen as the perfect domain extension for their phone and thats where the value lies.

As for the future of the mobile phone;

Your phone will have gps/satnav. Retail outlets will Know your phone position in relation to their store. They will send adverts to your phone if you are within distance of their stores. This would only happen if you opt in (reduction in line rental from your operator to encourage you.Stores pay operator per ad per handset maybe).
You buy your goods at the store and you would use your mobile to pay for goods by using pin number on you hand set. No need for debit/credit cards.

The mobile phone will be with us a long time. IMHO.

P.S. And you can use it as a phone lol.

You've presented many valid points -- and ideas which are being taken very seriously by large corporations as we speak.

Names which are explicitly mobile (i.e. ringtones.mobi, scores.mobi, sex.mobi, porn.mobi, ...) will without a doubt be the likeliest candidates to someday rival their dotcom predecessors. It just makes absolute sense that a person whom, like you said, has access to a mobile phone 24/7 may like to keep up to date with the scores of NFL games in example.

No .mobi needed...except when you have your phone in your hand. You are so correct that China and Japan already do this and are far ahead in this arena. Even more evidence to point to the fact that the cell phone IS the pda, cpu, laptop, computer, web enabled device of choice.

How many of this same population are carrying pda's, laptops, and umpc's IN ADDITION TO the cell phone. A very small minority.

Actually, the phones have computer chips in them with "electronic cash" deposited in them. Nothing to do with the web at all. Sorta like ezpass here for the p.a turnpike, plus you can talk on it :talk:

Discussing how .mobi may rival .com in a specific niche is a completely different discussion than the OP's statement: "I believe that .mobi will become far stronger than the .com in the next few years." Which BTW I still consider to be preposterous. It is not meant as an insult, it is the most accurate expression of my opinion as requested by the OP.

If we are discussing niches now, names like taxi.mobi I think have a shot at dominating their industry for public use, assuming .mobi becomes the household word we all hope it does. But I firmly believe this will take longer than the next few years. 3-5 years is a much more reasonable yet still aggressive time-line.

I spent most of May 31st optimizing my keywords, choosing relevant categories, etc at Namedrive on my top 50 names. My CTR has since gone from slightly under 5%, to 31%, pretty much overnight. Every name of mine with more than 2 views now has clicks -- in fact, no name with clicks has a CTR under 20%.

If we consider these kind of CTR from optimized .mobis to be the norm, we might not need all that much traffic at all to realize windfalls. Study after study confirms that mobile web users click ads more frequently and my experience over the last few days has certainly confirmed this for me.

Adult names and supplements that increase libido have been very successful, although I'm sure you already figured that much Other than that, I've had a fair bit of success with technology related domains (i.e. PCCards.mobi), and job/resume (i.e. resumetemplates.mobi) related domains. What I've found most useful is to "listen to Wordtracker" -- it's much better at picking out good, relevant keywords than I am!

I have already optimized them and have noticed high CTR on certain domains, but the CTR for the whole portfolio is still very low. Surprisingly one of my top domains is 3d-live.mobi which received about 45 views and CTR of over 30% and that’s even higher than what I got on 3dlive.mobi.

Clearly we still have much to learn about how mobile users surf the mobile web Perhaps part of the reason that my CTR is so high is because most of my names are dictionary words or names of herbs/supplements. I guess if you're looking for Viagra, an ad promising to take you to a Viagra seller's website is worthy of a high CTR?
