People tend to entrench deeply into a position on the Internet, mostly due to the anonymity and at least partially because it's fun to get under someone else's skin.
I use my real name to keep myself honest... Jeremy or Jeremy Padawer. This is it. No where to hide from criticism.
I've noticed that with each MOBI transaction, news post, or MOBI report of any kind, threads tend to evolve into a PRO vs ANTI MOBI scenario.
Truth is... most of us are moderate. We fall into a continuum of beliefs.
I would call myself one of the more heavily vested MOBI backers. I've put a bunch of money into registering and purchasing outstanding generic MOBI names on the secondary market.
I've made it clear that my belief is that:
1) MOBI will be an important secondary domain name extension.
2) MOBI will be a nice alternative to COM in the mobile space.
3) MOBI has been managed very nicely by the registrar.
4) MOBI is positioned beautifully as the MOBILE space develops.
5) MOBI is an outstanding extension branding choice... and you are seeing many MOBI names pop up in branding at this time. Samsung and the like.
6) MOBI is the next ORG...
MOBI will not succeed due to the tremendous technological benefits. Why? Well, simply stated, there are none. There is no domain name extension that offers a technological advancement.
MOBI is being launched at the right time. The extension sounds right. The extension has been picked up by a very large # of corporate entities that may or may not use the extension.
At the end of the day... something is going to give. Whether it's a tremendous new mobile application where the developers used a MOBI extension, or it's a big branding campaign put forth by a large content driven brand (like www.nba.mobi or www.universalchannel.mobi), or it's thousands of kids using mobile as a social network under a MOBI name... something is going to give. It could happen in the US, Japan, China, Europe or Latin America... something is going to give.
MOBI is the right place at the right time in the development of the Mobile web. 5 years from now and MOBI would have missed the boat.
In early 1997 I started purchasing domain names. I identified that you could generate type-in traffic from generics, mispellings and cybersquatting. I received C&D's on cybersquatted names which I quickly gave up to the rightful owners. I sold the other names by 2000. I worked with very little money and walked away with a great head start.
1997-2000 were magical times for me on the Internet.
2007-2010 might be magical times for me on the mobile Internet.
Don't forget... it's the same Internet. MOBI is a well positioned extension being offered at the right time. MOBI isn't a technological breakthrough.
We'll leave technological breakthroughs to Apple and mobile development to a hoard of VC, angels and private developers who are just about to bust the door down... some of them using a MOBI domain name.
MOBI lovers - center yourself.
MOBI could work. Screaming from the treetops at folks who dislike the extension will not advance the brand.
MOBI haters - the world isn't black and white. More poorly positioned, technologically useless things have caught on.
MOBI moderates - remember 2007-2008. It could go either way. I think MOBI is going to take off... something is going to give.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Padawer
