.mobi .Mobi ownership without the corresponding .Com

Hello,

I would like to open a discussion about the question below.

How important is it to own the corresponding .Com to a .Mobi domain?

For example, I have a few very brandable .Mobi domains with would offer a much needed service for mobile internet capable equipment. The problem is that all the corresponding .coms are taken.

If I were to develop and market those domains would it not create a great confusion for the users?
What about all the irrelevant traffic for the owners of the .coms ? Which could cause server issues...

On the long run, considering that .mobi was created to allow a mobile specific format for sites and content, wouldn't it sadly make sense for .mobis to just be a mobile version of the parent domain?

Would love to hear your thoughts.
Daniel.

This is something that i question too... the dot-mobi registry says the purpose of dot-mobi is so "when a user sees a .mobi site they know it will work on their mobile on any network" and for developers they claim "if the standards and techniques are followed that dot-mobi recommends, they know it will work on any phone, any network and not have to test each individually"

They also say that .mobi eliminates the process of guessing a websites "mobile version" such as mobile.website.com or website.com/mobile or website.com/m, etc etc... instead of all that you would just go to website.mobi...but this is the part i question... because of course not all .mobi owners own the corresponding .com

for it to really eliminate confusion imo, .mobi would have to be very very VERY popular..

for example, almost all people that have used the internet know the difference between a website address and an email address... but will almost everyone know that not every .mobi site is the same as the pre-existing .com?

or will "they" even know what the hell .mobi is?

hmmm

Very interesting conundrum- I've sent a link of this thread to Vance Hedderel the PRO guy at .Mobi to see what he comes up with. I'll post his answer here if he does not himself. That is if he answers of course.
Regards
Fred :)

If .mobi does become popular I can see some .com owners coming after the .mobi version of their name. This could potentially be a very bad situation..

Bad for who? If you own a TM .mobi, then bad for you because it will probably just get taken away. If you own, generics, then potentially a good situation though, right?

I was thinking the same thing. If this happens, hold on to your horses cause this is gonna be a rough ride....

interesting topic :) i own a bunch of mobi band names that i dont intend on cybersquatting. i know the bands webmasters and have worked with them in the past. now i intend on webmastering there mobi sites.
i cannot see a record label not wanting there .mobi names for there own bands. the names are trademarked after all. imo your playing with fire and can expect to get burned on all trademarked names

very true, i was thinking about this while typing my initial reply.. a couple of things could happen if .mobi "takes off" and the .com owners start to get really interested in the corresponding .mobi domain...

1) .mobi owners with quality landrush regs will be really rich.

2) .mobi owners holding domains that have a corresponding .com in existence may face bully moves even if their domain is clearly not a TM violation..

my guess is a little from column A. and a little from column B...

but thats a big if.....
