I was looking at the stats for the .mobi zonefile this morning and the count was 867629. The landrush anniversary count was 959154. The difference in registration volume is 91525 domains. The volume of domains in the zone is only off by 9.54%. The Landrush anniversary was 26 September 2008 and as such the landrush in many of the newer TLDs tends to last approximately three months. During these three months the number of new registrations surges. After this initial period, the registration numbers begin to fall off.

I posted an article about this on my blog [1] but this post just summarises it. The number of domains that have dropped out of the zonefile since the landrush anniversary is 154006 but in the same time, 62481 new domains have been seen. This is lessening the effect of the Junk Dump phase when the stuff that could not be sold is dropped. Far from being a wipeout, there is still life left in .mobi.

Regards...jmcc

Back on topic - Trust us Jeff, et al, .mobi is doing a lot better than you realize!

Thanks for posting in the lively discussion ... after 2 1/2 years, how, exactly, is the developed ".MOBI" doing a lot better than we all realize? What can we look at - specifically - that shows that the ".MOBI" has gained any traction insofar as its awareness / adoption?
IYHO.

It's clearly not the sales prices (down 90% - 95%+), it's not the drops and Zone Files (down approx. 23%), it doesn't appear to be the "ecosystem" and mass developed .MOBI websites with content, and it's still an inherently long, two syllabled, and clumbsy extension - counter-intuitive for quick & easy use for those that are "on the go", IMHO. :guilty:

Show us the substance. :yell:

Congrats on the .mobi income, but we really don't want to look at you in your underwear :alien:

Well, at least I don't. The others can speak for themselves.

Here's the substance to your idiocy, which you still are avoiding explaining 'why you backtrack' on your moronic double speak of requirements needed. --
Jeff said:
That's not "the most important one", Mark ... you know as well as I that fully developed stand-alone websites are far more important than one's (simple redirects) simply being "promoted" (in quotes), IMHO. :snaphappy:

Have a nice weekend!

...So, your saying if 50,000 major well known companies all started promoting their .mobi site tomorrow in a national blitz (redirected or not), it would be pointless solely based on the fact that said companies didn't build another mobile site (assuming they already had one) strictly for their mobi? ...
Jeff said:
Let's just try to stick with reality here, Mark! :red:
Nice deflective avoidance to a logical answer to your non logical reasoning. What's the matter, can't admit it when someone counters 'your rules' on how things 'should be'??

So, AGAIN, is not his point/query valid, based on 'your' criteria (in pink(fittingly!))??

Well said MrRhee.

Is Jeff really on the staff of Namepros? If "yes", the ownership should know there's something cheesy here. Staff is supposed to be held to a higher standard than the normal participant.

All too often we are treated to the shortcomings of various players in this industry.

"M Dots"

Personal attacks and silly off topic man underwear commentary aside, I am presently in the process of researching some major corporations that have adopted (developed and promoted (including indexing in the respective SE's) their respective "M Dots" (instead in the ".mobi") ... and I will soon be posting on that very relevant and timely compilation shortly, IMHO.

In the meantime here is my post at the mTLD Blog:
Assuming even the need / desire for "mobile sites" (versus one internet, ala the super cool iPhone™ and other smart devices) in the future, without unique & compelling stand-alone development on the .MOBI's ... major companies and brands will continue to build, and brand (collectively, as the standard), and effectively index and SEO their respective "M Dots" at a pace far exceeding the number of new & existing simple redirects of .MOBI's to those very developed sites, IMHO. ".MOBI" is already playing catch-up, and it simply a matter of mathematics going forward:
m.google.com
m.yahoo.com
m.facebook.com
m.youtube.com
m.comcast.net

etc.

^ These have already paved the way ... and they have opted to build and brand their respective mobile sites / "M Dots" - but not electing to do so on the ".mobi"! :guilty: :imho:
The awareness and adoption of the .mobi can only substantively come from its unique and compelling development for those that are "on the go" ... and this stand-alone development is not occurring.
mTLD has - already - lost to the adoption and proliferation of the "M Dots"!
All IMHO. :gl:
Regards.

The request here, though ... in the topic and context of ".mobi doing much better than expected" was simply;
Show us the substance. :gl: :yell:

Thank you for any professional insight.

Guys, just a friendly reminder to please keep this on topic. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and someone with a negative opinion about .mobi and/or Mtld is allowed to post their opinion(s) just as someone who has a positive opinion is.

I've tried to remain relatively neutral, but to be honest the personal attacks from some of the pro-mobi members are getting really childish. If you can't get along with another member here, click on their Namepros profile and click "Add this user to Ignore" -- then you won't see any of their posts anymore and you won't have anything to get worked up about. Another alternative would be to just avoid this thread. It really is as simple as that...

Any thread which makes bold claims such as ".mobi doing much better than expected" is no doubt going to generate responses from both ends -- you can't honestly expect to create a thread like that and not receive a few people commenting that things really haven't been going so well lately when that much is obvious.

You are missing the point, giving an opinion is quite something else then
stalking an extension, wether it is here in the .mobi forum or at MTLD or
in the industry news section of this forum or formerly at Mobility.
Wherever the word MOBI appears he's there for sure. What's the sense
of this, it must be a day job for him. Why is it so important for him to prove
.MOBI is worthless? There must be a reason for that!!

There are plenty of members here who take time out of there day to make sure that comments stay balanced in the various domain forums here on Namepros.

Imagine if you were a new member and everywhere all you heard were that domain prices were going to double, triple, etc overnight. It's healthy for a domain forum (or any forum where monetary investments are being made) that both sides are heard. I don't want this to turn into a rant on Jeff again, so please nobody go there, however I will mention that many people have pmed me over the last couple years mentioning how much they appreciated Jeff adding a sense of balance to the forum and how it made them more cautious about investing in .mobi.

Reece, you seem to be an a-ok person, but this is the typical NP response ('erase and deflect the blame') to the 'one issue' that keeps good domainers peturbed and away from here. Sad, but it seems that a collective effort is made to support and defend the 'spoiled out of control child' here. And let's be fair overall, this is 'not' just one instance or one issue, this is the exact same thing that 'many' have complained and grieved about here for years!! Yet the ones that are affected and subjected to the consistant badgering of their posts and threads, are the ones always made out to be the ones in the wrong here!! To me, and 'many others', letting a continuing problem fester and continue, reflects not only on the reputation of the institution involved, but what is truly important to those that let it. (And one wonders why 'one' gets voted better than 'another'!?) Whatever, it's more than obvious how things will be handled here, and anyone wanting to discuss things 'rationally' not liked by one, will have to do it elsewhere. Sad.

(now I'm sure Siberia is where I'll be sent for stating such!)

Hawkeye, I get what you're saying - please understand that we're striving to make this place a discussion forum where all opinions are free to be shared.

You'll never get sent to Siberia for stating an opinion. ;)

Trolling is not tolerated, and anyone doing so will receive a warning to that effect. Trolling is defined as "the posting of messages intended to spark a fight" - not necessarily "being controversial to get attention".

If anyone feels that someone is trolling, please PM me the post and I will handle it, or you can click on the "report post" button for another moderator to handle it.

Domainers to invest in .mobi and those who do not are both welcome at NamePros. If you have received the impression that this statement is not accurate, I would love to read your comments/concerns/suggestions by PM or e-mail at: [email protected]

Thanks guys, it seems to me that if everyone just stays on topic and respects each other's opinions, and does not make any immature personal attacks ... then things should be smooth as pie here in the #1 Namepros .MOBI Forum™, IMHO. :talk:

In considering whether the ".MOBI" is doing better than expected, it also occurs to me that we could easily have an "M Dot" Forum™ ... and not much would be different than here in the .MOBI Forum© - as there are presently options for "mobile websites" here in a time transition in seeing how the larger Mobile Web© will evolve - but it does seem clear to me that amongst some of the large and leading corporations, "M Dots" are increasingly becoming the standard in this arena, IMHO. :gl:

Top corporations ... incuding influential internet and media companies are increasing their development and adopting stand-alone respective "M Dots" - the proliferation of these preferred developed, promoted; indexed and optimized websites is creating an awareness, and acceptance, to which they are quickly becoming the standard (at the expense of the ".MOBI"), in my judgement.

This is further exacerbated ... as mTLD seems to struggle to ensure, enforce, and advance critical stand-alone developments of its own network, an developed "ecosystem", of unique and compelling websites - instead taking the easier path and opting not for development, but simply redirecting (under the mantra of "promotion" (branding / marketing)) its own long, unnatural, and highly problematic brand toward these same target "M Dots"! It is failing to ensure even its own signature "trustmark" ... note the examples of "Flowers.mobi" and nearly any one of the previously auctioned Premium Domains (that are now twice past published deadlines for mandated development requirements)! :guilty: :imho:

The indecisive ".mobi" is not the standard ... rather it is increasingly cementing itself as only a small niche/vanity address with a relatively small niche following, in my view.

Major companies, though, are building, branding, indexing, and optimizing their respective "M Dots" ... and at a faster pace than their .MOBI counterparts, and mTLD is therefore in a constant defensive position of trying to play "catch up" - using redirects of an inherently less-than-desirable brand that has thus far been shunned by most major players, IMHO.

Until there is truly ONE internet ... this is the way things will remain, absent a miracle break-through for mTLD and the .MOBI which would have to include unique, stand-alone content / development, unwavering enforcement of its "trustmark, and mass awareness amongst both developers -and- mobile users - who, in the case of the latter, at the same time, are increasingly looking for accessible and full enjoyment of an full & unrestricted web (a la the super cool iPhones™ and other popular smart devices - I believe the demand and usage for these will grow exponentially over the next few years). Over time, ONE internet! :talk:

Here is a very partial but impressive list of MAJOR and influential companies that presently have their own developed / branded / promoted / indexed "M dots" (and, do not have their own stand-alone developed and indexed .MOBI (other than simple undeveloped redirects in a few instances):
m.google.com
m.yahoo.com
m.facebook.com
m.youtube.com
m.ebay.com
m.live.com
m.myspace.com
m.cnn.com

Therefore, overall I believe mTLD/.MOBI is not doing better than expected! :gl:

Please discuss the topic in a polite, professional manner ... and feel free to add to the list of corporate "M Dots" here in the thread, as well. :talk:

Kind regards, and see you soon!

Since you brought up the topic of immature personal attacks, it would be useful for you to one day answer for accusing mTLD and early .mobi investors of criminal activities... http://www.namepros.com/2802344-post80.html ... it seems nothing could be more personal, immature and irresponsible.

You're entitled to your opinions, but your opinions do not equal the truth. I invite you to form your mdot domain forum, and best wishes with your first sub domain investments.

You are completely free to continue to fully ignore all those companies who do use .mobi, and clearly you fully intend to ignore them.

mTLD isn't struggling with anything, they are future thinking, providing tools to developers and domain owners alike to build mobile content. Instant Mobilizer is the latest of their efforts, again you completely ignore this like anything positive for .mobi.

A domain extension can not be indecisive.

Again, intentionally and conveniently ignoring those companies who do use .mobi, as if everyone has to use it in order for it to succeed.

There is only one internet, unfortunately the vast majority of developers completely ignore mobile users who access it.
