OK, so I just hapened to see this diet pill offered at Walmart the other day (for $49!) and just now saw a blog post describing one teeny tiny negative side effect: you're going to need diapers!

The drug is called Alli and here are a few choice quotes from their website:

Because of the way in which alli works, eating meals with too much fat may cause side effects known as treatment effects.

…pick a day to begin taking alli, such as a weekend day so you can stay close to home if you experience a treatment effect.

If you’re getting ready to travel or attend a social event, hold off on starting with alli until the event is over.

You may not usually get gassy, but it’s a possibility when you take alli. The bathroom is really the best place to go when that happens.

“You may feel an urgent need to go to the bathroom. Until you have a sense of any treatment effects, it’s probably a smart idea to wear dark pants, and bring a change of clothes with you to work.”

While no one likes experiencing treatment effects, they might help you think twice about eating questionable fat content. If you think of it like that, alli can act like a security guard for your late-night cravings.

Sounds like a fun way to spend $49!

We saw a pamphlet about this stuff at safeway the other day. I am a fitness trainer, so i examine diet/weight loss pills very carefully. I am horrified that the FDA approved this stuff...

But then, you guys should be weary of any 'sugar free' snack w/sorbitol or sugar alcohols. The side effects to these snack are similar to those of Alli. The sad thing is that they make those warning labels so small on the packages...and then the only warning is: may cause a laxative effect. HA!

It sad how the industry takes advantage of this country's image conscious culture.

Yeah, I just blogged about this.. I agree, it's crazy that they approved it! What a tradeoff..

the FDA has become something of a joke, from approving leaky fart diet pills to turning a blind eye to ecoli brand leafy greens.

no kidding, i remember when they made special chocolate flavored laxatives, i guess some guy in marketing thought it would be a great idea if to take the product from the pharmacy isle to the snack and food isle.

Yeah, I recently had a doctor tell me that "paring" down my medication for depression might result in my experiencing "flu-like" symptoms! :hehe:

Well if it helps people loose weight people will definitely use them even with its side effects.

We sell a load of "dietary" foods at work (I work in a hospital) and if you read the labels, on about half of them you can just about see "May cause side effects".

Should be better labelled really!

If you've ever seen the sales display for Alli at Walmart, I'd be very leery of taking the drug. If they feel the need to mention the possible "treatment effects" so strongly on the display and on the Alli website, I don't think I'd want to chance soiling my underwear in public to lose a few pounds.

I remember seeing this on the Colbert Report.

If you do, just remember wear dark pants and carry a spare change of clothes around :hehe:

I saw something about Alli on the local news, I guess its making a pretty big stink. I bought some Xenadrine EFX a few weeks ago and found out every time I take it I have the bathroom-related "symptoms" everyone is talking about for Alli.

What amazes me is that

1) they actually gave the green light to market this with these side effects and
2) people actually buy it!

I think I'll buy ALLITREATMENTEFFECTS.COM (still available) and just put a big affiliate link to adult diapers... ;)
