Somebody call the secret service. Or Barack. Or their PR firm. Or whoever.

MichelleObama.com is currently on Godaddy expiring domain auction, high bid around $55 atm I think. Don't these people have people who actually watch out for things like important expiring domains?
I can understand mistakenly letting go of FertimeerOrshlandergut.com, or whatever their 73rd security officer's name is... but the first lady . com?

Unless of course it was cybersquatted and the owner simply doesn't want the risk any more? Anyone know what's up with this domain, who had it, why it's expiring? Just curious.

It will be interesting to see if it gets renewed... or if bidders take it up very high, or stay away from it in abject fear...

In any case, I'm surprised it hasn't hit the news yet. President's wife's name dot.com expired and up for auction? Nice news blurb fodder :)

seller knows its gonna gather interest prob just seeing what peps bid for it

thus hitting the renew button before the end.

This trophy domain is probably more a liability than an asset. Maybe the owner realized the can't really use it.

I have never understood why someone would reg someone else's full name with the hope of selling it to someone with that exact same name. Many celebs will grab the name via UDRP.

I am 99% sure that Michelle Obama is not interested in her exact name domain. She could build a site on Blahblahblahblahblah dot com, and it would attract traffic just because of her own high recognition factor.

According to Go Daddy's own traffic stats, this domain garners about 250 visits a month. I have sites with lesser names that get almost 100 times that. It's all about content. A good name will help build more quickly, but will fall flat after a time if not used.

Now somebody's going to register Blahblahblahblahblah dot whatever in each of the new TLDs!

I wouldn't put the percentage that high. She is still a relatively young woman. And will be pressured to 'be her own woman" after the white house. She could be the next oprah. First couples are not paid like rock stars, if they want 50 mil Michelle might have to get a job. If there any post white house divorce she might really want a job.

In other words her wanting her name in dot com badly is not far fetched

Bids are at around $90 now.

I guess I was surprised that their PR engine doesn't snap up a few important domains like this for them, especially if they're unregged or are being squatted on, just for that vague term 'safekeeping'.

Like all the American Idol contestants; by the time they make it to TV, every one of their names is regged in at least dot.com by the Idol people (used to be regged in multiple extensions but lately I'm noticing mostly just dot.com), to protect both Idol and the contestants at least with the top tld's.

I'm not talking about malicious people getting ahold of them and starting wars or making severe personal attacks; just talking that - maybe, you know - white house pr people might not want to suddenly see pics of Michelle with a Groucho Marx mustache, gstring and stripper body, holding an AK-47 and standing with one foot up on a dead elephant that's been poached. No problem to see that on other sites, but why take the chance some disgruntled fanatic from America-hating countries like Slipshodoviaski decide to have fun with it?

Not that I really care about anything I just said. Just saying, surprised the people who do care about things like that don't check on the dot.com of whoever is in office + their significant other and try take ownership of it...

PR and personal appearance are carefully guarded, and the internet is a huge arena, and your Name+dot.com is still the potential quintessential address representing 'you' online...

in 2009 this domain was used on some kind of fan blog for Michelle Obama after that it has been parked on GoDaddy. Price now over $1000, will be interesting to see the new development of this domain name.

If I were her I would buy it for a fair price if possible. Contact the seller directly, I'm sure she can make a deal. lol I own my name .com, I'm sure she wouldn't mind owning hers as well.

Would she have actually wanted this? I believe the 99.9% claim is senseless. There is, of course, the .gov she could try to get (if she doesn't have it already), though it'd take time to acquire. Many ppl know little to nothing about .gov, and an embarrassing amount of ppl will believe damn-near anything on a .com website. In other words: a michelleobama.com site could have a Photoshopped pic of her molesting a Photoshopped pic of her kids & millions of ppl worldwide would believe something nasty was going on in the White House. (Well, nasty things happen there daily, in a political sense, but anyway). If something like this happened, the site would be taken down, domain seized etc. But the best defense is a good offense. She might know this. Why did she not go for the domain? I dunno. But the "99.9% sure she had no interest" seems unrealistic to me.

Buying a person's name for resell is pretty stupid. But it comes as a waste of money to the buyers & nothing more. I accidentally let randypendleton.com drop once. Some idiot registered it & put it up on sale. It promptly expired & I re-regged it. Some ppl's ignorance astounds me: like I was gonna go, "Oh please sir, I need it back! I'll give you $5k"?? lol Idiotic fools.
