Hey all figured with the recent .io 6 figure sale and the nice .xyz sale by a follow NP member. We should open a showcase and discussion thread here.

Metaverse is a fast growing keyword, term and niche! Let's share and discuss our name and news.

I've only got One to start with but its a GOOD one my favorite ending keyword on most names.

Welcome! :)

I'm super surprised that people (probably mostly domainers) are STILL purchasing and regging "Meta" domains. I don't think there is much to worry about legally, but I am concerned about public perception of the word Meta in this industry as it becomes well known to the general public that its the nane of the most popular social network corp. It WILL cause the risk of confusion if Meta(the company) becomes as popular as Facebook. I don't think many more companies with a brain will be plannning on using using the word Meta anymore so I'm expecting demand for that keyword to crash soon. A crash is going to of ciurse happen regardless, because of the hype but I think it's going to crash even harder when people realize that perception in the future *could* be that Meta Headset dot com for example looks like Facebook Headset dot com. Domainers in this thread resist this idea now but I think entrepreneurs(end users) are a little more cautious and aware of these kinds of long term risks. This will likely affect the sell-ability of "Meta" domains to *most* end users in XR, but I believe "Metaverse" and other related keywords are unaffected.

Just my take!

(heavily edited)

Meta keyword has been around forever and will continue to be used. Facebook does not own the word, the metaverse or the future of this niche. If anything its a clear sign they know Facebook is outdated.

There are numerous other people using Meta who do have Meta trademarks so stop talking like Facebook is anything but a stale brand with massive bad press in the last 4 years trying to put on some new clothes.

You know who uses Facebook? Old people and Mom and Pop shops. You remember My Space? Neither does the average younger person 🤣

You should not worry yourself with other peoples speculations.Time will tell. I do believe most will not pay the kind of prices we have witnessed names selling for the last month so in that regard people will have to come down to earth.

Let's look from this perspective;

If facebook owns pay.com and rebrands as pay.com do you think it will negatively affect paypal, payoneer or other popular pay keyword related companies? I really don't think so.
Or lets say rebrand under trust.com. Do you really think it will negatively effect trustpilot.com or trustwallet.com I really don't think so..

Generic word is generic word, you can't own it yet you can use it. IMO Facebook tried to acquire metaverse.com but they couldn't. Because Meta itself is not as powerful as Metaverse. Meta is only an adjective word. "Metaverse" is the ultimate address.

I don't see any negativity for regging meta+keyword domain names, as long as it makes sense for endusers. And it will have nothing to do with Meta.com or facebook.

Looking at NP's "Favorite Registrar of the year 2021" poll, it looks like Name.com is getting less votes than NameSilo(.com) & NameCheap(.com) ;)

As you mentioned myspace; the 'metaverse' reminds me of secondlife.com

Anyone remember?

that was even before fb.
And they came up with that 'avatar' stuff etc.

Btw, head over to my auction and catch metawyrld.com :xf.wink:

I am not a native English speaker, but I see that we use adjective plus keyword, such as "virtual event" and "decentralized finance". So I registered some "metaversal" domains:

МеtаvеrsаlАrсаdе.соm
МеtаvеrsаlНоusеs.соm
МеtаvеrsаlСlоthеs.соm
МеtаvеrsаlСlоthing.соm
МеtаvеrsаlЕvеnts.соm
МеtаvеrsаlОffiсеs.соm
МеtаvеrsаlСеntеr.соm
МеtаvеrsаlSеrviсе.соm
МеtаvеrsаlSеrviсеs.соm
МеtаvеrsаlСаrs.соm
МеtаvеrsаlРеts.соm
МеtаvеrsаlJеts.соm
МеtаvеrsаlМоtоrs.соm
МеtаvеrsаlАgеnсу.соm
Меtаvеrsаl.сlоthing

Your analogy is misleading bc pay is a commonly used word that most people use or think about daily. Meta is a word that most people NEVER use (Unfortunately, because it's a great word), and most people don't even know what it means, so it will enter their lives for the first time because of Facebook and then a word that they never used will suddenly be in their *daily* vocabulary.

That's a extremely different scenario than Facebook rebranding as pay.com, is it not?

Other analogies that *don't* work are "block"chain, and "bit"coin... Many others. Meta isn't a company about the metaverse like a publication or industry association. They are a company branding as Meta to *BE* the metaverse. Pay is a service and people understand it as something that many companies can provide. But companies will be competing to *BE* The Metaverse. Huge difference there.

But all of this is only on top of my main point. Smart entrepreneurs like to be UNIQUE, DIFFERENT and TREND SETTING. Right now there is a race of companies trying to influence the public to associate Meta and Metaverse most with their brand. The winner of Meta has been determined loud and clear! That battle is OVER! Meta will be in your face a lot in the future and 99% of that marketing will come from Meta, one of the largest companies in the world and the largest social network Corp.

My point is that if you have an ounce of brain you will want to be UNIQUE and STAND OUT, so even if there's a possibility of using Meta and still stand out as a business, the benefits of playing it safe by Branding with a different word outweighs the risks of brand confusion, coming off as a copy cat to those previously unaware of "Meta" as a word, and falling under the shadow of a more powerful, mightier "Meta" company that is clearly an authority leader in the industry.

I disagree with this.

Meta might not be on par with pay when it comes to usage, but don't say that people have no idea what meta means or don't use it in daily vocabulary.

Now, if you were talking about the word, metaverse, then I can see your point as metaverse is a lexicon that people outside science fiction are not familiar with.

Time will tell what happens. But personally, I predict that companies will keep branding around the word meta both for metaverse and non-metaverse purposes

Most people don't know what it means in the context of the metaverse because most haven't even heard of the metaverse.

Only talking Metaverse here because outside of that the meaning while relatively similar has a totally different context than it normally does as a prefix.

Also most people don't USE the word Meta daily. And I would argue that most people don't know what it means even outside of the context of the metaverse. You have a very positive view of society that I admire but let's be realistic here...

Then maybe you need to re-edit your initial statement to reflect this instead of just saying that people never use the word meta
