mcd.com owned by Mcdonald's and Blank? Unused? Why?

Just came across MCD.com while doing some whois research for some .eu domains. I see that mcd is in the whois info for Trip.eu.

Odd that when I checked MCD.com it's blank and unused by Mcdonalds. Any idea why they choose not to use MCD.com? am I missing something? Is there back story to this?
