Mayor Bloomberg Announces Coming .NYC Web Domain
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – New York City is getting its own Internet domain.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Tuesday the new .nyc web domain will be available for New Yorkers and local businesses later this year.
A website touting the new domain said localizing a web address will make it easier for people to search for New York City businesses, organizations and content.
According to a release, New York is one of the first cities in the world to be granted a geographic top-level domain by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the nonprofit private organization responsible for overseeing the distribution of IP addresses and domain names.
The approval of .nyc comes as ICANN works to expand the number of generic top-level domains beyond extensions like .com, .org and .edu
