NamePros was moved to a new server this morning.

The old machine had been experiencing some hard drive issues and we were overdue for an upgrade.

Some good news, the new setup lets us avoid the early morning downtime for server backups.

Report any errors here in this thread.

Ok, first issue. Search index is incomplete. We may need to rebuild it.

A big issue is the size of our database. The posts and PM tables are huge! Surfing for ideas on ways to optimize our database or split it into more quickly accessible pieces.

I have the datacenter techs evaluating the servers now, trying to get the loads down and speeds up. Thanks for bearing with us.

It might be possible to archive the old posts and only allow posts on the new threads after the cutoff date. I'm not familiar with the db schema but if it is using MySQL you can freeze the old tables and make them read only. You can also compess the indices though again I'm not sure what fields are being indexed or the type of indexing. The older frozen data could be split to a secondary db box and this would leave the live db faster and with a smaller data footprint.

I feel it's a lot faster now with the new server.

No lag between click and page render.

Images were missing for a bit, but glitches are to be expected, specially with something this size. :) Good Going RJ! :tu:

ditto :) ... And another 100 bytes added :)

Lower the allowable PM count or trim. You can export all PMs anyway.

I was looking at posts from 2005 the other day so I like history being available :)

Not sure if vB has a nice way to archive to separate server but history should certainly never impact the current in terms of performance

It may help to have a primary db server, then a "slave" db server - where the "slave" mirrors the primary's data.

There are a lot of areas in vB where it can read from the slave, and write the primary. This is built in to vB. The replication of primary to slave would be handled outside of NP's web server, so should improve performance overall. In the end, I believe this is what DP had to do.

jmcc - good idea. I agree with what Juanny says, history should not impact the current performance. In theory we should be able to move old, closed or inactive threads to their own space so that the current content runs on a smaller, faster database.

// I'm wondering if we could just store the archived pages as static HTML pages? Bet that would speed things up! :)

Server is running really nice tonight w/ under 1.0 load. Anyone still feeling laggy tonight?

Was there a change in the emailing system as well?

RJ, to me everything is OK now except email notifications for private messages still do not work.... I may show that I have private messages but the corresponding email of its presence is not coming through.

My settings are set correctly.

oh ok Eric... I can do that... but the email notification that I had messages here when I was not logged in was helpful....also the "popup" of messages while logged in is not functioning either... just wanted to let you know.
