Marketing Techniques for a new forum

I have just started a new forum. And when doing google searches about how best to get users etc it comes up with a load of poo, So is their and big tips that anyone has got or sites that I can view to help me with my forum?

What would be the best way to promote it?

How to get users signed up etc?

Word of mouth is probably the best way to promote your forum. Let the people whom you know, about your new forum and ask them to join and make a few posts. You should take the initiative and make a few posts and threads daily. Nobody would like to join an empty forum. Once you get a few members, start a referral program with help of the those members, you can also start contests and offer rewards and incentives for the members.
