I recently got mp3mega.com on backorder at snapnames. I wasn't going to purchase that domain. Had just registred with snapnames and was just testing how things worked. Clicked on "Backorder" for mp3mega.com just to see how and where it showed up in my account from there. After that I forgot about the €@$¤`s! domain until snapnames mailed me about successfully aquiring mp3mega.com and they have charged my cc for f****g 60 bucks. What a dork! But here comes the best bit. It turns out that mp3mega.com have direct type-in traffic :bingo: How about that! The bastard domain actually makes me money :D Sometimes fools are lucky toooooooooo

I back ordered a french domain thinking the alexa rating would make it valuable. Long story short, it was "fake alexa" and got absolutely no traffic (it had a hyphen for crying out loud). I put it on sedo and forgot about it. 2 months later, I ended up getting an offer on sedo for it, and made 10 bucks off of the name. heehee

I had something similar recently.

I backordered a name because of some backlinks.

I eventually grabbed the name but when I doublecheked I realized that backlinks were not that good (at that moment I would have cancelled the BO, but it was too late!).

Parked it and ... believe me or not : it's now my best traffic name, paying its fee several times a week

It's great to fall into a good thing despite ourselves. Helps balance out the times when our best laid plans don't do so well.
One of my top ppc producers has come from a name w/ a "z" ending that I regged for aesthetic reasons. Little did I know, when I registered the name, that the traffic would come from a "z" for "s" typo. Visitors must like the links they find on the landing page, because traffic and clicks have tripled over the past 2-3 years and the domain has only been a ppc page and has never received any promotion.
