I have not found it using the search option so I thought its time to start such a thread.
I'm a big fan of .LINK domains though I was very sceptical to the so called new TLDs.
The reason why I like .LINK though no fan of the new TLDs are:

  • "link" has a natural universal relation to Internet. We use sentences like "send me the link". You can combine it with every keyword. And its logical - a link to the keyword.
  • it's very easy to remember. Its also new so it sounds interesting. It's just sexy ;)
  • in my opinion it sounds better than "web" as long you are not some working in the web industry
  • the word has got common in other languages. In Polish we also say link, in German too. Though for some languages it sounds better than others. For example in general german domains with a keyword and .link sound more natural and nicer than in Polish.
So far I have bought some. Maybe my best is notebooks.link. But jet sold none. Since the domain is at start I was interested in the sales. I really think .link will happen to be a big thing.

To paraphrase General Ulysses S.Grant: .COM has over 114 million domains and .LINK hasn't.

That's irrelevant.
.com was available in 1985 while .link in 2014
.com had no competition, while .link has beside the old gTLDs an other 1k new gTLDs. Getting registrations now is an achievement.
I'm not saying .link is better but comparing stats like these is just pointless.
If .com was in the new gTLDs, it would have no chance to survive.

There are certainly companies that have used the word link in the branding of their company, Link is one of the most popular keywords by domain count. I think that is why Frank liked it, but I am not sure if the .link makes people think its is a link shortener. ProLink.com ok I understand that is your brand name and when the average person sees it no problem, they may see Pro.link and think what the heck ? Look .link was one I thought about but could not hit the register button, it just did not make sense to me for buying to resell for a profit, now that is just my opinion it may be a huge hit for you, and I hope it does work out to make you money.

Here are some .com regged

The question is how much will these names in .Link resell for, you are a salesman are there buyers for your product at a profit margin that justifies investment ?

^^ I second equiry78's comments.

I just saw an advert on the internets to .RODEO D-: ... what are they thinking?

Jib if ICANN has their way they are going to be coming out for years, I think people are zoned in on 700 and think that's too many. The number Frank Schilling threw out was 40,000 extensions years down the road.

It would make sense to keep releasing them, if they don't then the exercise would probably be useless. Maybe I'm being short sighted here, but I haven't seen any appealing gTLDs yet to date. I'd love to know which ones you've found worthy of registering :).

The prospect of 40,000 gTLDs in the future makes it even harder to invest in these doesn't it.

Oh I agree at the point of 40,000 extensions, heck 2500, it really becomes confusing to the general public, we are probably already there with the confusion. The average person who thinks being tech savvy is they synced their Gmail across all devices and can use Vine will have no idea. So is that Pizza.Nyc or Nyc.pizza no Giovanni that's a NycPizza.com.

I am not sure what people will do, ICANN made a lot of mistakes, someone should have said no singular and plural, if you want to run .photo and someone else photography etc... look we are going to get all the participants in a drawing and then auction and one extension for a niche will be released by language. I mean is it .photo or photos or photography ? Some names on collision list in one but not another, premium reg vs standard its a complete cluster.

I was interested in .Media, KeywordMedia.com is a niche I focus on, so I regged a couple to protect names that have gotten multiple offers, even if we debate from the domaining community that a business should not build on a new gtld, I would rather have the set of both Roulettemedia.com which has received multiple offers along with Roulette.media. Even though I would think it foolish for someone to build their business on just Roulette.Media they might not care and avoid buying my RouletteMedia.com. So I figure remove one obstacle.

I also regged Fantasy.Media as I like it for a couple categories, entertainment, fantasy sports etc...

I did reg Puppy.pics as it was one of the higher exact match names in that category, and I love Dogs, so I figure I can do something with this name.

I regged one .sexy, a lot of Geo were held back or regged so I picked up SouthBeach.Sexy, certainly don't expect any big sale, but I figured at least there is a place where people tout the sexiness of their residents.

There were some others I looked at but really could not convince myself that it was the right move. Media I am interested in, puppies are great so I was fine with those and I did not go crazy 5 regs. The other extensions I thought I only care about reselling and I just don't know who is going to buy them for a mark up worth the risk. I am sure some people will make some sales but I think with endless supply of extensions its not worth risking real money to play a game that is first off rigged by ICANN and registries and has no liquidity. I will speculate a few hundred dollars but I am not interested in anything serious, I care about liquidity and selling nothing else. I am not interested in holding anything for 20 years, technology moves too fast imo.

Reminds me of the .tel thread.

Yeah. Nice talks but lets go back to the root. Btw. does anybody know how I can find sales for a particular TLD? I visit Sedo and see a little box of the 10 last sold domains (all TLDs) - not the most efficient way I suppose.

Great post, it was really interesting to hear your approach to the gTLDs.

People justify the new gTLDs and say that good domains are hard to come by, hence the previous mention of "BestCheapCarsOhio5.com", but I disagree... There are great names that can be acquired for $500-$1000 in the .com space for almost any keyword to match any business idea. Sure it take a bit of looking, but anything that's worth doing does. That amount of money is a drop in the ocean.

Just a thought. :)

I don't really want to offend anyone, but when i see a enthusiastic post about these new gTLDs ... i don't know, it looks a little creepy to me.
How can someone believe .link will be a "king" , or even a good investment? ... It's like gambling, i totally agree with this definition i read here very often.

HOWEVER there are several "enthusiastic" domainers, then some quickly profitable flips are possible if you were fast enough to register strong (and related) keywords, but we're talking about small ROI imho.

The thing that really really really annoys me about these new gTLDs is that they have the cheek to hold back all of the decent domains. If they have to release them in this way to make it commercially viable, then they should be looking at a different model.

It seems as if they don't act for the "good of the internet" anymore, they act just to maximise profits for whoever.

It makes me sick.

well, there have been days when people would laugh about the concept of a PC. Specialists told the world in future there will be need for maybe 500 computers in the world.

I can understand, its most secure to copy an existing business concept that already works. But I can not understand that many experienced people dont see a big difference between .LINK and the other new TLDs. As far I know only .WEB could compare to .LINK but the second is more internationalizable, sounds good in other languages too. With the right marketing .LINK can get _THE_ alternative to .COM domains. And the team of the registry seems energic enough to make a good job.

On the other hand its good domainers don't like .LINK. This wil surlely help to build a real base of consumers - the best marketing at all when people see real websites with this extension.
