The trials and tribulations of a hand-regger...

You get a thought or idea in that little brain of yours.
Your pulse rate jumps up a beat or two!
You eagerly enter your "idea" dotcom (while crossing your fingers).
Sh*t! The dotcom is gone!
You switch gears.
Maybe a variation of your "idea' is available.
NOPE! That dotcom is gone as well.
There's still hope.
The plural must be available.
No!
Maybe instead of the "s" you substitute it for a "z".
Gone!
How about a typo?
Negative.

Ahh...what the h*ll....nets aren't all that bad...are they?

This post popped into that little brain of mine while I was on a quest for that next great hand-reg.

I started out with:

LemonCar.com...(only .mobi and .tv available)
Next:
LemonCars.com...(just the .biz, .mobi, .tv)
Next up:
LemonAuto.com...(.com and .mobi were gone)
How about:
LemonAutos.com...(a bit better but still no .com)
Ok, maybe:
LemonVehicle.com...(nope)
Surely:
LemonVehicles.com...(wishful thinking)
Last resort:
LemonAutomotive.com...(Yup!)

Don't like it...it's available, as is the plural.

LOL..,
I have another ritual that I do.., In addition to what you do all above.
If the name that I wanted in all tlds are taken , then I go to the Whois and find what date the least popular ext. of that name hv been created. And as I'm new.., I let out a sigh & think 'well this was created way before my time!' and console myself.

I do the same thing. If it was regged recently though, I will kick myself for a few days over it (eg: Reem.tv). Still kicking.......

great summary Scott. How many times do you think,"this combo might be available" only to see it was regged in 2004 DOH :'(

Occasionally I have a great idea for a domain name pop into my head. It's usually something rather weird/unlikely to be registered and doesn't have anything to do with current events or some other factor that would make someone want it. I can't really give an example, but it's happened to me quite often. And on every occasion I find the domain had been registered anywhere from a month to a day before :( Those are the worst.

People are worried about doing Whois lookups in fear that someone may be selling the searches and someone might reg the domains. I have to contend with psychic domainers! It's just not fair :)

I check a few dozen domains per month based on news articles I've read, conversation, blogs, etc. Most of the time they're already taken, but occasionally I get lucky...

Just today, I regged LicenseScan(s).com after seeing some articles about increased use of automated license scanning equipment on patrol cars, checkpoints, etc.

On a related note, once I start checking on a particular domian, I figure on having about 15 minutes max to decide whether to register it or not - if I haven't decided by then, I move on and forget about it.

Been there done that. Just yesterday I regged 25 names around a particular theme. Will watch the traffic and maybe let the more obscure ones drop.

Any hand reggers us www.BustAName.com and let it do the plurals and variations for you?

DM,

I saw that yesterday. But in that short amount of time you've regged alot of good ones though. We all have so many fingers to type at once.., unless you know how to type with your toes too but, didn't at that time ;).

LOL :D

I don't even usually bother checking to see if the .com is available anymore - 99.95% of the time they are long gone. I just register the .ca and .info - park and watch the money roll in -especially on the .ca's. The trick is knowing or estimating what people will be likely to be typing in. I've even registered monsters like socialinsurancenumber.info and seen instant type-in traffic.

Of course not every one pans out - but that's what websites are for since you can't taste .ca's!

You can check multiple tlds at www.iWhois.com. It's a really nice report.

haha this is a great post. I know exactly how it feels when that little idea pops in your head and your pulse rate goes up. Suddenly you get excited while making your way to your favorite registrar, only to see the .com is taken :(

I've learned to accept .net's though. they really aren't that bad! I have to agree with notlikeyou though, it sucks when you decide to check the whois on that domain you were just dying to get, only to see it was registered 3 or 4 years ago..lol

LOL right on :D

I have been through this so much that I don't even feel bad now. Yes I do try to sell that substitute domain name to myself at first and if it does sells then only I put the money on it.

I even doubt that some people who have taken that plurals and typos are lamenting on their decisions right now but the registrations are for 1 year min :D

I like your description. To me I always assume the best names are already taken.

Women complain about parking lot: the good ones are always taken, the leftover are handicapped.

I hand registered all my best domains in the early 2000's but these days I find the domaining tools available and monikers bulk domain search are far more productive and necessary to secure the good generic keyword combinations still unreged. Brandable invented words is all I hand reg these days.
