Licensing digital map data for use on a travel site

can anyone point me in the right direction ? I'm looking for digital map data so that I can build a mapping application for use on a travel site of mine.

I'm not looking for GIF/JPG maps that I can put on my site, but the actual datasets that I can use to build a mapping application which would be able to zoom in and out of specific locations etc .....

where do you get such kind of data. although I'm looking for Asia specific stuff, even if someone's used it for other locations, I would love to hear (that would probably point me in some direction)..

I know where you can get maps for Hong Kong....but some may be avaliable in the public domain.

Data sets? are you possibly looking for GIS data?

Doing a search for "gis data" on Google gives a few million hits,
including a few interesting ones. Good luck!

@gene: yeah the end result would be something similar to google maps (but not as great). I would love to use the google maps api if I were to use it on a travel site related to the US ... but for asia, their coverage is not that comprehensive...

@irkasmork : yeah you're right about GIS data. that's what I'm looking for. Been searching on google. I might end up with something good.

my usage of the data would be similar to what you get on zillow.com except that these guys use it in the context of real estate, and I would use it to map tourist locations etc....
BTW: do have a look at http://www.zillow.com they've done a tremendous job :tu:
