Hope to tell other newbies like me not to wait too long if they see an available domain at standard price. I didn't realize standard domain prices can fluctuate to premium prices at registrar's will.

I added a .co domain (available everywhere at standard price) to my cart. I got sidetracked and a couple of days later when I went back to completing the purchase, it was changed to premium at a higher price.

It's no longer available at other registrars and it's not an aftermarket listing -- only available through that registrar (Dynadot) and at the premium price. Still may purchase, though not happy. Do you see this happen often?

Never heard of .co raising premiums like that. My guess is it was probably being auctioned on Dynadot, and you just caught it in the process. Hard to tell 100%, though.

Lesson in any case: if you see a domain you like, run your checks within an hour max and buy it - don't leave it even overnight, let alone 2 days...

Yeah, no whois record. No history on wayback. Not on auction. Not on marketplace. Just exclusively available to hand reg at one registrar. Crazy.

Agreed..lesson learned.
As for .co names, I dug around and read stories of reclassifications happening where owner must pay premium renewal prices although they bought it as non-premium. Maybe not worth the headache?

Second guessing and leaving to come back later, just to find a domain no longer available or listed for sale as a premium (Instead of available to register anymore) seems like a topic I've heard a lot over the years.

The moral of each story is to grab it when you type it in the first time and see it's available to avoid any unfortunate coincidences later.

You can find out if a domain is registry premium by typing it into the search box at https://w.is/

I suspect what happened here is that Dynadotโ€™s algorithm spotted it in your basket, registered it and then put it up for sale at their own price.

State the domain name so that your story can be verified.

Stories like this typically stem from some kind of misunderstanding.

If the domain name is a registry premium, then it would be available at other registrars for the same premium price or a similar price.

If it's only premium and available at a specific registrar, it could be that the domain name was registered there at the standard price and listed for sale exclusively at the registrar's marketplace.

So the price went back down as non-premium so I placed the order right away. Was excited to get order confirmation at that price, but status is pending. I placed a support ticket and now it's back showing available at premium price at premium renewal.

Awesome link, thank you. So the name indeed shows up as non-premium, with non-premium renewal.

It's looking more and more like this is the case. Especially if I hear back from support that my order didn't go through and the price stays back up. We'll see.

Btw, still not showing up in marketplace or auctions.

State the domain name so that your story can be verified.
Allow me the opportunity to get the domain before announcing where it's up for grabs.

Alright, I didn't realize 4-letter .co names are not registerable.

After not hearing from Dynadot for 4 days, I followed up a (second) time about my order. Their response:

"We got the error from the registry said it can't be registered as domain is under 5 characters. So it had to be cancelled and refunded. You may want to submit a longer characters domain to retry, thanks."

Sounds like a reserved domain that is not available for registration. Dynadot must not be handling the failed registration gracefully.

I've seen this before. Some registrars handle unregistrable domains better than others. Keep in mind that .co is the country-code for Colombia, and reserved domains are country- and registry-specific.

Sorry to hear that, DarlaMay.

Acting quickly can really make a big difference sometimes.

Ha, yeah..thanks.

Not one to impulse buy, but i get it now. It was fascinating to see it go from non-premium, to premium, to non-registerable because it was too short.

I appreciate the posters who gave relevant insight to this matter.

However elementary this experience is to those here, hope it helps even one person.
