The golden age of Latin-letter .com domain investing is over. The mine of premium short, meaningful, or brandable domains is exhausted, with names like love.com or king.com locked up or priced out of reach. The surrounding market is shrinking—high costs, low liquidity, and long sales cycles make it a losing game. The future lies in new frontiers, and IDN .com (Internationalized Domain Names), repurposed as social media usernames and digital collectibles, is the most promising path. By solving the scarcity of Latin-letter domains and enabling trading as vibrant as cryptocurrencies and NFTs, IDN .com can redefine domain investing. The Fall of Latin-Letter DomainsDepleted Supply: Premium Latin-letter .com domains (e.g., short words, four-letter names) are mostly registered, with secondary market prices in the thousands or millions, locking out most investors.Complex Transactions: Domains used for websites or branding require corporate approval, leading to slow sales and niche buyer pools.Declining Utility: Search engines, social media, and short-link services have diminished domains as traffic gateways, reducing ROI for average names.IDN .com: Pivoting to Usernames and CollectiblesIDN .com domains (e.g., 爱.com, 财富.com) support non-Latin scripts like Chinese, Arabic, or Cyrillic, creating a new supply of investable assets. By shifting from websites to social media usernames and digital collectibles, IDN .com unlocks immense potential:Social Media Usernames:IDN .com can serve as usernames or digital identities on platforms like Twitter/X, WeChat, or Discord (e.g., @家.com, @成功.com), showcasing personal or brand status.Unlike website-focused domains, username purchases are driven by individuals or small brands, simplifying decisions and shortening sales cycles, akin to NFT avatars.Example: A KOL buying 爱.com as a Twitter/X username gains a culturally resonant identity, like @King but with deeper local appeal.Consensus Value: The semantic and cultural value of words (e.g., “love,” “wealth”) is intuitive, fostering market consensus and reducing transaction friction.Digital Collectibles:Scarce IDN .com domains (e.g., single-character Chinese 家.com, 美.com) are prime digital collectibles, comparable to rare NFTs like CryptoPunks.Their “bragging rights” as usernames (e.g., @财富.com) mirror NFT status symbols, but with no blockchain tech barriers, accessible to all.Example: Holding 梦想.com as a collectible could yield high returns as social platforms or Web3 ecosystems drive demand, like early NFT gains.Collection Ecosystem: IDN .com can be tokenized as NFTs for trading on OpenSea, combining domain scarcity with blockchain liquidity, with low holding costs (just annual renewals).Solving Scarcity:Latin-letter .com domains are tapped out, but IDN .com offers new inventory with non-Latin scripts (e.g., 幸福.com in Chinese, سلام.com in Arabic). The equality of linguistic scripts allows IDN .com to serve diverse global markets, breaking the Latin-letter monopoly.Achieving Crypto/NFT-Level Trading ActivityBy pivoting to usernames and collectibles, IDN .com can achieve the high-frequency trading of cryptocurrencies and NFTs through:Decentralized Trading Ecosystem:Like crypto exchanges (e.g., Binance) or NFT marketplaces (e.g., OpenSea), IDN .com can leverage platforms like Sedo or Dan.com, or be tokenized for blockchain trading, supporting instant auctions, leasing, or fractional ownership.Example: 爱.com tokenized as an NFT and auctioned in ETH on OpenSea attracts speculators and collectors, with trading speed rivaling crypto.Advantage: Blockchain transparency tracks transaction history, boosting buyer confidence; instant settlements reduce friction, like Bitcoin’s peer-to-peer trades.Community and Hype-Driven Value:Like NFT communities (e.g., Bored Ape Yacht Club), IDN .com can be hyped on Twitter/X or Web3 communities, amplifying its “status” value.Example: Promoting @财富.com as a KOL’s exclusive username, backed by celebrity endorsements or cultural narratives, sparks market frenzy, akin to NFT hype.Platform Integration: Social platforms could offer “verified username” features for IDN .com, like WeChat’s naming rights, driving purchases and trades.Low Barriers, High Liquidity:IDN .com requires no website development or filings, with minimal holding costs (~$10–$50/year). Trading needs no blockchain wallets or Gas fees, accessible via Sedo or social platforms.Contrast with NFTs: NFT trading requires blockchain knowledge, while IDN .com usernames appeal to broader audiences, expanding the buyer pool.Leasing Model: Like crypto staking, leasing IDN .com as usernames generates steady cash flow while retaining upside potential.Speculation and Collection Frenzy:Scarce IDN .com domains (e.g., single-word Chinese .com) mirror crypto’s scarcity (e.g., Bitcoin’s 21M cap) or NFT uniqueness, drawing speculators to drive prices.Example: Like ENS domains (e.g., vitalik.eth) fetching high prices on OpenSea, 财富.com could spark a collection frenzy via social or Web3 hype. How to Mine the IDN .com FrontierInvestment Focus:Target scarce, culturally resonant IDN .com domains, like single-character Chinese names (爱.com, 家.com) or trend-based terms (智能.com for AI, 虚拟.com for metaverse).Explore other languages, e.g., Arabic سلام.com or Russian мир.com, for localized markets.Trading Ecosystem:Use Sedo or Dan.com for quick sales, or tokenize IDN .com as NFTs for OpenSea trading.Offer leasing models, renting IDN .com as usernames for cash flow.Marketing Strategy:Promote IDN .com on Twitter/X or WeChat as premium usernames, e.g., pitching @财富.com to influencers or startups.Partner with NFT/Web3 communities to integrate IDN .com into digital identity or virtual asset projects.Long-Term Collection:Hold high-potential IDN .com domains, awaiting adoption by social platforms or Web3, like early crypto or NFT wins.Risks and OutlookRisks: IDN .com adoption relies on social platform support and user habits; non-Latin script browser compatibility needs tech advancements.Outlook: As usernames and collectibles, IDN .com frees domain investing from website complexity, aligning with social media and Web3. Its trading activity can rival crypto and NFTs, driving value in a virtuous cycle.NamePros community, let’s move beyond the barren Latin-letter .com mine and tap IDN .com’s potential as usernames and collectibles. Which IDN .com names excite you? How can we drive crypto-like trading for them? Share your thoughts!

How many times are you going to spam the same IDN promotional thing in the general discussion section?

It's annoying indeed.

Aside from the bizarre title, the wall-of-text formatting is highly unreadable, and reeks of AI, because of phrases like this:

"Trading Ecosystem:Use Sedo or Dan.com for quick sales"

So many people can't even be bothered to actually post. Instead, they just rely on AI to do everything.

You can no longer let your old money deceive newcomers. You know best the probability that your Latin letters will meet the seller. It is clear that domain names should open up new mines.

It's interesting, however, to see that DAN.com has made such a lasting impression on AI that several similar NamePros accounts continue to recommend it, even though it's no longer possible to list domains there.

If people need AI to have a discussion, they have already been eliminated.

It's completely pointless to have a forum in that case.

AI will indeed eliminate you people because the articles written by AI far exceed yours. But the idea of the article is mine. I let AI write it, which greatly saved time and made the text more beautiful. Why not do it this way? You are clearly jealous because your decades long writing skills have been instantly crushed.

I never claimed to have writing skills.

I am able to sell domains without the need to spam forums though. :xf.smile:

Coming to the forum is to seek new investment opportunities and discover new investment products, not to rely on your writing skills. The method used to write the article is not important at all. My article is about the shift in domain investment, and I will not argue about AI issues.

Here's a little AI for you...

As a bonus, it is also formatted in a readable manner.

IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) domains — those that use non-Latin characters (like Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, etc.) — may seem appealing due to their linguistic and regional relevance, but they're often poor investments for several key reasons:

1. Low Global Adoption

Despite existing for decades, IDNs have not been widely adopted by businesses or end users:

  • Most users and brands still prefer ASCII domains (using Latin characters) due to familiarity and compatibility.
  • Global internet users often type URLs in Latin characters even when their native language uses another script.

2. Technical Limitations & Compatibility Issues

IDNs face numerous technical challenges:

  • Email and software support is inconsistent. Many email servers and older software still don’t fully support IDNs.
  • Browsers must convert IDNs into Punycode (e.g., xn--fsq.com), which is unreadable and unappealing to most users.
  • Some systems and databases reject non-ASCII characters, breaking functionality.

3. Security Concerns (Homograph Attacks)

IDNs are particularly vulnerable to phishing:

  • Similar-looking characters across scripts (e.g., Latin "a" vs. Cyrillic "а") can be used to spoof trusted domains.
  • As a result, browsers and registrars often limit or flag IDNs, reducing trust and visibility.

4. Market Demand is Weak

The resale market for IDNs is very limited:

  • Few companies are looking to buy IDN domains unless they’re operating exclusively in a non-Latin script market.
  • Domain investors report very low liquidity, with most IDNs not selling at all or fetching low prices.

5. Branding Complexity

  • Major brands prefer consistency and global recognizability, which ASCII domains provide.
  • Maintaining an IDN alongside an ASCII domain fragments brand identity and increases management cost.

6. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Challenges

  • Search engines like Google do index IDNs, but they often default to ASCII versions when available.
  • SEO tools and analytics platforms may misreport or struggle to track IDN traffic accurately.

7. Limited Monetization Opportunities

  • Parking and ad services rarely perform well on IDNs because they cater primarily to ASCII-based audiences.
  • Type-in traffic — a key revenue stream for some domain investors — is minimal for IDNs.

Summary:

ProblemImpact
Low AdoptionMinimal user interest
Technical IssuesCompatibility problems
Security RisksBrowser flags and user distrust
Weak Resale MarketLow ROI or no buyers
Poor SEO & MonetizationLimited visibility and revenue

Unless you're targeting a very specific linguistic market and understand the risks and limitations, IDN domains are generally high-risk, low-return investments.
