I have just come across kde.net, which is up for at GoDaddy. For those who aren't familiar, KDE is a popular desktop environment for Linux.

I am new to domaining, and would like to get the community's input on: how does a domain like this become available? Surely whoever buys this domain is going to face a trademark issue or a UDRP complaint? So, what's the motivation for a domainer to buy this domain? - The value in selling it to kde?

Thanks.

It is all in application. Acronym can mean anything. I had no clue KDE means something for Linux. So, I would probably bid for it as something like Knowledge Database & Education and develop along those lines, not for something dedicated to Linux...

Welcome to the forum.

kde .org has a build website on it and I haven't seen it to be up for sale.
However kde .net is up for sale @ GD auction.
KDE may not be necessary a TM issue, it depends what are you gonna use it for.

Good luck!

Thanks eurorealtor. Ah yeah, I was meant to say .net... Sadly I can't change the title.

You guys raise good points, I straight away associated it with Linux, but yea it will mean something totally different to others. So I guess if an acronym is generic enough, then there's less chance of a trade mark dispute? Are short domains with acronyms in them valuable?

I prefer not to mess with the trademark owners. There are so many fish in the ocean. I have no energy to waste to answer C&D letter.

I hope that help.
