I have been following the series of Wednesday evening YouTube broadcasts by @Helmuts Meskonis on his 'HostMaria' channel. A lot of the discussion surrounds two letter 'LL' domains in cctld's, and of course already having Go.LA in my portfolio I was interested.

Other 'interests' of mine are domain hacks and also Geo-domains, to go along with my interest in abbreviations, rarely though do these 3 'interests' meet, though occasionally they do - hence 'Go.LA'. Earlier this week I decided to do a search of available for hand registration short two letter domains in the cctld's and to my surprise there it was 'NY.st'. Yes it was classified as a 'premium domain' by the registry (meaning enhanced initial first year registration fees but then reverting to normal annual renewal fees). I had to of course register it there and then. :xf.cool:

So let me assume everyone accepts 'NY' as referring to 'New York' as a taken fact. What then could the 'st' stand for. Well I think most Americans would give one of two answers 'Street' or 'State' - and when associated with the letters 'NY' meaning 'New York' then they will associate the 'st' as 'State' and the whole domain being cognitively considered as being 'NewYork (dot) ST(ate)'.

Now consider how much the domain names 'NewYork.com' and 'NY.com' are worth. After all New York is both the largest city in the US and the 4th largest State in the US by population. :xf.wink:

One interesting aside is that I looked up the abbreviations for 'st' and something I had not considered was the fact the 'ST' is the abbreviation for 'sexual therapist' and/or 'sexual therapy'. When doing a defined search for 'New York' and these two terms the number of results returned were 750,000 and 823,000 respectively. (There are other possibilities as well but thought this example was interesting.)

So depending on how you think about it 'NY.ST' can be 'New York State', New York Sex Therapist' or 'New York Sex Therapy'.

Of course some one is bound to be a clot and say that 'NY.st' stands for 'Naval Yard Sao Tome and Principe' - but some people cannot see even when their eyes are wide open.

Anyway I am more than happy with adding this domain to my portfolio. (y)

You could also try to sell it to nyst.com.

If the money was in it then it would be - I am about 8 miles away from North Yorkshire. LOL

But seriously the money talks, hobbies walk (which developing a North Yorkshire site would be).

.... against which you have New York.

    City population 2020 .... circa. 8,300,000 (est.)

    State Population 2020 .... circa. 19,400,000 (est.)

    State Economy (pre-covid) - over $1.5 TRILLION

Now to match that kind of market you would have to sell a lot of hiking and camping equipment to North Yorkshire visitors. :xf.smile::xf.wink:

Ahh I thought you were going to develop it - if it is for resale then obviously New York is a much bigger target market.......never say never to that potential naked rambler who is looking for a niche North Yorkshire tourist site though.....

At the moment the domain NY.ST will only be placed on the 'For Sale' listings, though it might well end up going the same way as Go.LA and be developed on a partnership basis with the 'partner' being the developer (which in the medium term works out far more profitable than a simple sale of the domain asset - @Rick Schwartz talks an awful lot of sense that is worth listening to concerning partnerships and development of our assets). :xf.wink:

What's the price of these on registration? Still about $400?

First year registration is 'premium' and can be found circa $400-$450 (although over a $1k at nic.st). After the initial year then renewal can be found at circa. $20. (I will be moving NY.ST to Epik.com when the 60 day hold ends for this very reason :xf.wink:).

When I registered NY.ST there were still 375 'LL' domains left including some other State abbreviations and 4 repeating 'LL' domains. There was also 572 'NN's', 'LN's', and 'NL's'. The list can be found at nic.st, just go to the dropdown menu for 'Domains' at the top of the page and the 'premium domains' are the bottom tab of the dropdown. (Just in case anyone is interested.)

I would also check Epik.com for the initial year registration (something I failed to do until afterwards - :xf.frown: - O_o )

Ah its good to know carrying costs on this won't weigh down it's Sunday drive. Love the name for sure. And
matching a LL.LL to an LLLL.com is actually pretty cool too.

I don't think they would be able to afford, or willing to afford, the price I would ask. LOL

    Hi

guess somebody gotta hype it up,
so all the rest will get registered
just to instill some sense of value
    when all are taken.

    reg on...

    imo....

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this time @biggie you are wrong.

If I were 'hyping' the extension or even the 'LL' domains of the extension why would I openly state that I only purchased one domain? Why would I list the 375 not registered showing that only 300 had been registered? Indeed if I was hyping surely I would say that the other unregistered domains had value or opportunity?

As it is I told the facts how I registered the domain 'I' wanted, how I even made an error by not registering it at the cheapest place (that I only realised after my registration). I even told the story about finding out that the suffix could be an abbreviation for 'sex therapist' and 'sex therapy' (which made me laugh to myself as those possibilities never entered my mind until seeing the list of abbreviation meanings). I then answered an enquiry about registration prices and went further by explaining about renewal fees. I also showed how to find out what 'LL' domains were still available, and then a little while later tried to help further by posting the list of available 'LL's' as of 3 days ago.

But as I said above @biggie everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

    Take care. :xf.smile:(y)

Thanks. I have had my eyes on a LL.st for a while now as it's a perfect match for a side project but can't justify spending $400 just for fun.

Pricing is decent through. I know a lot of people willing to spend that kind of (initial purchase) money to own a novelty domain for fun so at least there's some liquidity in them.

LL are premium in any new gtld... so, if this or some others going for GA then it's a concern.

They're not all premium. Plenty of them come at regular reg fee.
