Just 1 small question

What does registars have to do with money that people buy domain names with. if it is all profit they could give out FREE domain names if they really want to, so what do they have to do with the money once they get it?

Maybe pay back some of the money that they have invested in establishing the Registry and associated framework
Just so we can register the Domains in the first place.
I Didn't know registrars were supposed to be charitable organizations

How would it be possible to give domains away for free? They have to pay $6.00 per name (.com & .net) to Verisign and 25 cents to ICANN. The registrars don't get the names for free so if they gave away free names then they would be in the hole big time. .

would you give free domains? It may seem a automated process to you but they do alot of other stuff. keeping the site up, providing support, etc. just buying a domain isnt the only thing they provide

lol, well i would do like anything for a free domain name . I wouldn't mind a registar that gave you a domain name and DNS services and that is it..... but still, they would have to pay verisign or something?

Yep, Chris answered the question above. $6 goes to Verisign, $.25 goes to ICANN.. the rest pays for their overhead. A lot of people forget it costs money to run a business.
