Ass Names with PageRank Question

Why do people buy totally off the wall domain names with higher pagerank scores? I've seen some bizarre domain names sell with a PR5 or PR6 as the only redeeming quality, and there were multiple people bidding to acquire them. What do people do with those domains once they buy them- like for example a PR5 with the domain name being a person's first and last name run together? *** On another note, how much weight do backlinks represent towards a domain name?

There are many theories about this.
Ex:
+ http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank_calculator.php show how to calculate pagerank for a page. This show that if you got a link from a page with high pagerank -> you pagerank will grow up. So, they buy domain with high PR to make link to there main website
+ 301 redirect can tell search engine that a domain is forward to another domain. So, thay buy PR domain to make 301 redirect to their main website to get profit from high PR domain
+ Many people want to have link from high PR page. So, they buy high PR domain to sell back links.
