Looking at the DNJournal latest sales there are some domains that I am just amazed by the sale prices again and again.

What I also see quite often is a WORSE variation of domains that I actually own going for astronomical prices. For instance, I'll see in DNJournal a sale for a domain like: brandnewwidgets.com for $13,000 and I may own newwidgets.com or even widgets.com and can't get $500 for the names I own (These are just examples and do not represent actual sales or domains I own).

Is it a good idea to try to contact the new buyer and say, for example, "Look I saw you buy brandnewwidgets.com for $13,000. I am the owner of newwidgets.com, which is a better domain than the one you purchased, so how about buying my domain for half the price you paid for the one you bought?" Or something along those lines?

What are all your thoughts on this?

I think the domains you're talking about, are domains which are auctioned by Snapnames... And there, the bidders are sometimes mad (me too, I must admit).
The main reason I think: "This is my only chance to acquire this domain name".
1 year ago, I bidded for a name as an enduser (for my main business) and when I see now that the reseller has parked the name... I'm quite sure he will not get his money back before 10-15 years... because I really wanted that name, and I bidded in consequence, but at the end, was more reasonable than the winner (no regrets at all, He paid it too much).

I, too, am both astounded and delighted at the prices on DNJ...astounded for the same reason gericsb is, but also delighted that these name values are so high. It's easy to point to a sold name in DNJ and use that as a negotiation tool.

Snap names is a cash cow...I don't know their system, but I wanna be like them.

YEah--if only I could get a few of my names into one of those snapnames auctions, I could probably retire!

If you really want a name, you've got to pay the price the seller wants. We all know that some sellers have lofty expectations and that tends to draw up asking prices within the industry.

thanks all for your replies--I guess my question was more about HOW to contact the people who have just made a purchase of a variation on a domain name that I actually own and convince them to ALSO PAY ME the near astronomical prices that paid during the auction.

this might be deceiving, but it's an example of 2 or 3 words in name
globalnamesearch.com for example

global name search ovt - no results
name search ovt 16109

yet to me global has a better fit - worldwide..

key words in the name -
