Hi All
I just registered a .it domain through my Australian registra. And as soon as I received the registration approval and the receipt to say they took my money - I also received an email from nic.it to say that my name was in hold status and that to own a .it name you hasd to be a european resident or have a company registered office in Italy.

I see a lot of people dealing in Geo tld's so is there a get around or have I been conned?

It's correct. You must be resident in Europe or have a company in EU.

I'm Italian, I can register it for you if you want. (on my name but it will be yours)

As others have said, no con- this is standard for .it (and some other extensions too).

You need to either get an EU-based friend to fax off the requested documents, or use a registrar that provides a 'local office' to do it for you (e.g. EuroDNS.com).
