Is Type-in traffic just a bunch of bull?

I mean really. I see people park there domains all the time with the intent they will make money. This makes no sense to me. I dont understand how parked domains make money by people actually typing in the domain itself. What about for tlds that are not .com? who on earth will type in a .info or .us, etc. Where is the real money to be made with parking?

Also, is it possible for search engines to recognize backlinks on a parked domain? How can a parked domain rank high in serps if yahoo and google know that parked domains contain no content and therefor wont rank it high?

I think you may want to join in.... in this thread http://www.namepros.com/parking-and-traffic-monetization/361532-define-legit-traffic.html

No completely BS..No...Way over exaggerated, Absolutley, imo

Although i have heard people sit and typin in domain names, I have never done it, Not once, And why would should they? It is far easier to search google for what a person is looking for, And find way more of it that away too. Then once a person finds what they want, They most usually bookmark the site i would think... So typin - typin - typin ... Nah....i don't buy it

Oh...and welcome to NamePros

Only a closed mind american would think .com is the only tld ever to get traffic. Pat Pat. Its ok, I get lots of type in traffic every day :). And only 5% of it is .com.

I have typed things into my address bar and added .com and .net to phrases before. It is normally a pretty efficient way to find exactly what you are looking for. If you want to information on sportbikes the first thing I would do is type sportbikes.com into my browser. I find search engines to be cluttered and most of the time have pages that have nothing to do with what I am looking for. By typing a word straight into your browser most of the time you will either get a website dedicated to that exact thing or a parked page directing you to websites dedicated to that subject. Its not the worst way to go about looking for something.

you would be amazed to see how many people type in the word they are looking for with the .info extension. I have e.g. SonyCamera.info and DigitalRecorders.info with a reasonable type in traffic.

You can make money only if you own generic domain names. But seeing that all the one word generic names are gone, and the good 2 words generic names are also gone, that leaves us with not much choices. So the ones available for hand-reg won't generate any type-in traffic at all. You need own good generic names to earn from type in traffic.

Isn't this violating the Sony trademark?

There are also typo's domains and new crazes that come out. I fairly recently regged financd.com which recieves traffic and also have wear.ws which gets some type-in traffic also.

Yes, but that is another issue.

Personally I dont like parked pages, it is annoying that so many generic domains have been parked and seems a real waste. Im sure developed with a little bit of effort that could earn multiples of the revenue they currently get.

My question is...Why would you?

Google is the quickest way to find anything almost, Sportbikes.com will be right there, Along with thousands of other Choices.

The arguement for a lot of generics being parked are they are currently owned by people who plan on reselling them. If you put a website up that you may drive away a potential buyer. Also there are domains out there that can be hand regged and get type in traffic. I regged an adult name 2 months ago that gets over 200 type-ins a month.

I often get lots of results on google to websites that really dont give me the information that I am looking for but have been optimized for the search. While the majority of the time I will use search engines I also just type the domains in to see what I get. I also feel like in the adult entertainment side of this there would be more direct type-ins then going and searching on google. Its easier to just type in xxx.com instead of going to google and typing in your keyword and the looking through all the results.

I would agree, Adult names are probably the most Typed in names, But domain names as majority, I don't buy into the pure typin traffic theory, My typin traffic is 11% , That is a very low %, And also considering the amount of domains out there, as well as websites, I just don't buy into the people who say, I get 200 typins a day, every day, Not logical, doesn't make sense to me, with google and yahoo search engines having everything right at a persons finger tips, I just don't buy it.

I agree that most traffic on the web most likely comes from search engines, directories, email marketing, viral marketing, backlinks, and other forms. The adult industry is probably a bit higher with type-in traffic accounting for a higher % then in the other domains but even in the adult area I would assume a ton of traffic comes from free web galleries. With regards to type in traffic I can only really speak from the point of adult names because the majority of my names that get type-in traffic are of that nature.

type in traffic is big business - google it

from wikipedia

* In November 2004 Marchex acquired the generic domain name portfolio of Name Development Ltd., a little known British Virgin Islands company, for 164 million dollars, predominantly for its 100,000+ domain name portfolio generating 17 million type-in traffic visitors each month.

* In August 2005, industry trade journals such as dnjournal, DNF and domainstate reported that sale volumes and prices of existing generic domain-names were rising rapidly as a result of type-in traffic monetization opportunities. Many small publishers are generating thousands of dollars each month in revenue with very little effort by building websites that serve relevant advertising to their type-in traffic visitors.

* In April 2006 DemandMedia.com purchased the domain name registrar eNom as a tool for acquiring type-in traffic and for a portfolio of thousands of type-in traffic domain names.

* In May 2006 iREIT acquired Netster.com, predominantly for the thousands of generic type-in domain name names contained within the broader Netster domain name portfolio

Generic , Top level , Domain Name. Is the keyword

Sex.com
Mortgage.com
Free.com

Those are the type of generic names, That will get typin traffic, Anyone here own a million dollar name?

I sure don't, The "AVERAGE" domain names, Don't get 200 typins a day, Most don't get two typins in a day.

That averages out to about 170 visitors a month per domain. I can see that if a bunch of generics were involved in that.

Lets up the ante a bit here.

Be completely honest, otherwise we will not accomplish any thing here.

DO NOT INCLUDE , typo domains, or Trade Marked Domain Names.

How many of you , REALLY , Get pure typin traffic, If you do, How many pure typins do you get a day?
