Is there such thing as a laser gun?

Ive been wondering about this for a few years now, but you know how you'd see laser guns in movies when you were younger? Is there such thing as a laser gun or is it all fiction?

You know those laser pens? You can get 100MW versions of them, which will pop balloons and burn walls etc, they can burn your eyes and have been known to take planes out of the sky as their range is something like 70 miles.

Something similar, but i don't know of anything like the typical laser gun.

As for the "set phasers to stun!" type laser guns, i don't think so no lol

Very cool!

As for the initial question, I think the engadget link answered it. They have powerful lasers out there and definitely, as you can see, possible to make them small. It's just is it economically feasible. No ones gonna do it unless they can make money from it, or have enough money to do it for fun.

Starwars/Star trek - probably not. But basic laser guns exist.

I remember seeing a laser gun on a show on the discovery channel, Future Weapons i think. Its not like a laser gun you can hold, the thing is huge. They want to use it in aircraft to shoot down other aircraft and missiles. Its so big right now, it takes a plane the size of a 767 (something along those lines) to carry it.
