is there a way to find out the previous regsitrant (WHOIS) of an expired domain..if their information is, of course, not privacy protected?

You can order whois history at reg.com for 3$ per domain.

No free open source?

Whoxy.com/history/EXAMPLEDOMAIN.com for FREE!

Domain scammers / thieves / shillers hate Whoxy, and do not want it to be well known. But Whoxy is instrumental in finding these crooks.

One of the best free tools the internet has to offer to domainers.

Their pricing is extremely affordable, I have never seen something like that. Come on, can you really complain on 2$ for 500 Whois history queries or for 250 reverse Whois queries?

Tried all three and what @Grilled suggested is the best so far.
Thanks for the suggestions!
